--------------Chapter 1 starts here--------------
I stood in front of the tents, watching in awe at the wonders we had accomplished. These were normal city people with no experience whatsoever. No skills, no tools and most importantly, no experience.
These people had been conditioned to the life of the city. The rich side, where everything was served to them on a platter. The poor side, where they had to go make a living on a day to day basis.
But that was nothing like this. The city was more forgiving. If you screwed up once, you'd be able to make up for it. But here if you screwed up, all you could do was repent. From your grave that is.
------------------------------------------
Three days earlier.
I looked back at the people in the crowd. Most were panting and bending over, trying to get a moment's relief from the pain that was emanating from their very bones.
Children cried. Some adults cried. That was the state we were reduced to. On our very first day. The kind of suffering that would test our determination.
Even the cars seemed to be slowing down, their drivers tired of transporting food and other supplies to us. I thanked the heavens that we had our own stocks of food. Luckily, we were able to transport many weeks worth out of the blast radius to a stockpile area. All that was left was to keep it moving alongside us.
Finally, the chief of police turned around. "Alright everyone! That's enough for today! Set up camp here!"
He was met by a bunch of blank stares. He sighed. He knew this was going to be a long night.
--------------------------------------------
Since then we had progressed a lot. We had learned to set up tents, to get water and anything we needed, and even techniques to be able to walk longer.
But could we do it?
Over here, we'd have to work as a unit. That would be the biggest problem. Each of us needed to have each other's backs. But how could we? The people that we used to steal from? Who used to steal from us?
It should have been impossible for us to survive even a few days...
But somehow we did. And that was the beauty of it. This was something which should have been out of our reach. And knowing that just made it that much sweeter.
I looked back at the tents. Isa's tent was towards my left at a 10 o'clock position, just visible between two others. But I didn't dare go there. Not after what had happened with her dad.
I knew I'd probably blown it. But I couldn't face it now. I knew I wouldn't be able to handle the inevitable. I'd just collapse into a mess of tears.
Thinking about that itself seemed to fill my heart with sorrow.
"Hey Marcus!" I heard a voice behind me. One which I knew so well.
I made sure I wasn't crying before turning around to look at the source of the voice. This person didn't need the burden of my tears.
Jake stood in front of me, smiling from ear to ear.
I almost laughed. He was smiling at a time like this? In a place like this?
"What's up with the grin?"
Jake shook his head, emphasizing on how much he was disappointed by my inability to understand his joy.
"Marcus, why wouldn't I be grinning? This is the adventure of a lifetime! Drama, travel, action!"
This time I laughed. I had to take him to a psychiatrist if we did survive this.
