Acceptance

The car ride home is deathly silent. Cole is fuming in anger to the point where his knuckles are beginning to turn white from how hard he is gripping the steering wheel. I know from past experience that when a man is this angry it is better to not call attention to yourself. Stay silent, stay hidden, and stay safe. That's how I survive.

Finally, Cole sighs, breaking the tension that has surrounded us. "Dani," He begins to talk. "I'm not going to hurt you, that was a promise I made and one I will keep. Understand?" I meekly nod my head. Cole continues his speech. "I'm truly sorry that I ruined our date, but Dani. Seeing the fear in your eyes when I first met you, it was heart breaking. I swore to myself in that moment that you would never feel that way again. I understand this is all confusing for you, but soon you will understand. For now just let me speak. When I first saw you in the diner I fell instantly in love with you." My breathing hitches at his confession. "I accepted you right then and there. My only hope was you would accept me later on once we got to get to know each other. I learned I had to take things slow with you, you had a past. I learned then what my job was, to help you get over your fear, to help you to be happy, talk again. Even if it takes me my whole life, my mission is to make sure you are safe and happy. I promised then and I promise now, nobody, myself included, will ever hurt you again Dani. Seeing the fear back in your eyes today crushed me. You weren't happy, you didn't feel safe, and you didn't trust me enough to tell me. I was so mad at the person, nobody has the right to make you feel that way. I wanted him gone Dani, anything to make you smile again. The only thought in my head was I had to get you out of there. I didn't handle it correctly and I understand if you are scared of me now; but I won't hurt you, ever. Dani, when I get my hands on your father and any other person who has scarred you so deeply, I will hurt them. That is also a promise you can hold me to."

Tears gather in my eyes. Someone cares, Cole cares. Of course I am frightened when he mentioned hurting Father, I didn't think anyone could ever successfully stand up to Father. But yet again, Cole doesn't seem to be the normal person. Maybe Cole is right, maybe it is time to give into the feelings and the emotions that I have been holding on to for so long. The way I feel around Cole, that's the way I want to feel. Cole, he makes me happy; and, Cole makes me safe.

I surprise him by sliding out of my seat, over the connected bench seat, and into his lap. I snuggle against him just enjoying the feeling of safety that his presence brings me. I need time, but I am willing to make this work. You do make me feel safe and happy. I blush as I write the last part. Cole just chuckles and kisses my forehead.

"Come on Dani, we need to get home, I need to discuss the man you saw with Jorden." I frown thinking of the mysterious man. I know him, yet I can't recall who he is. Is he even a he? I shudder as a sudden thought crosses my mind. No Dani I scold, we don't talk about him, and it can't be. He is gone, or at least gone to me.

"Dani we're home." Cole alerts me pulling into the underground parking garage. Home, home is where Cole is. I blush, did I really just think that? Woman up Dani.

Cole grabs my hand and pulls me inside. "Alec!" he shouts at a man who walks by, "Call a meeting, the usual people. Also call my Nona, I need her to be here with Dani." He gestures down to me. Alec nods at Cole and then at me. I shift my body so it is farther behind Cole. I may be accepting towards Cole but others I still need to get used to.

Not even five minutes after Alec walks off Jorden saunters down the stairs. "Hey Dani." He smiles in my direction causing my lips to twitch upwards. Jorden has found a way to worm into my life and hold on tight. He always knows how to put a smile on my face. Cole smiles at me brightly before shifting his attention to his best friend.

"Did Alec get ahold of you?" Jorden nods in response tapping his forehead. Cole hums and turns back to me. "Nona should be on her way to spend some time with you. I need to talk to Jorden a few others. Please stay with Nona alright?" Giving Cole a thumbs up and a goofy smile I show him that I accept his demands.

Cole quickly pulls me in for a hug pecking me on the forehead. Before I can even register what is going on he has pulled back and is following Jorden back up the stairs.

Dazed and confused I turn towards Nona as I hear her enter the room. Handing me my pad of paper I allow her to lead me towards the sitting room's armchair where we proceed to talk about the day's events. I think I love him Nona.
