Camila woke up to the sound of Gerald's heart rate monitor, again.

It wasn't something she was used to at this point, but after spending three days and nights at the hospital, it was more so terrifying her. On night two, Gerald spiked a temperature of 104, which concerned his doctor because he's never had a temperature so high before. They changed his room so they could make sure his body kept cool and his temperature didn't increase higher than that.

Lauren and Camila were told to stay away from Gerald just for the time being since his doctor thought his temperature was due to stress both girls were causing him. Whenever Camila tried to explain that Gerald had no need to be in distress, the doctors simply shrugged her off and carried on with their tests and scans for Gerald.

"You're up!" Camila explained, jumping up at the sound of Gerald coughing.

"Don't feel good.." Gerald said, rubbing his eyes and swallowing thickly.

"Oh, do you want some water?" Camila asked, sitting up and rushing to the counter to retrieve water.

Shaking his head, he mumbled a quiet "No."

Camila nodded and sat back down, grabbing Gerald's hand. "Hey, it's alright. Why are you bein' all touchy and motherly? That's not the Camila I know."

Laughing, Camila shook her head and squeezed Gerald's hand. "I just don't want anything to happen to you, that's all."

"You know nothin's gonna happen to me, Mila. I promise."

"Don't do that, please don't do that." Camila replied softly, feeling a knot form in her stomach.

"Do what?"

"Promise something and then something bad happens and it's just this big li-"

"I'm not lying."

Gerald looked Camila deeply in the eyes and tried his best to make sure she wouldn't become upset, not again. He didn't want to lose her again and never see her for another seven weeks.

Not seeing Camila was painful. It made him feel awful and made him feel as if he lost a piece of him. Of course, he wanted to call but there's no way he could just randomly call and say "Hey, I know I basically threw you out but come back because I feel lonely and stupid without you here with me." In all honesty, Gerald didn't know what went wrong. He didn't know why he let Camila go through his own fingertips and he didn't know why he was being such a jerk to her, but the only thing he did know was that he needed to fix it and he needed to let her know how much he cherished her.

As Gerald looked at Camila and began studying her features, he felt even worse than he had been feeling for the past couple weeks. The fact that she was bitter and cold made him feel nothing but utter regret. There's no way he can make it up to her, but he can try. Even though he can try, he felt as if no matter how hard he tried there was no point. There was no point in trying to help fix Camila because he's the one who scratched her fragile glass frame and left smudges all over the place.

"Can I ask you something?" Gerald asked, swallowing a bit thickly and hesitating.

"Sure, sure. What do you wanna know?" Camila asked, bringing her attention from the floor back to Gerald.

"I know this seems weird because.." Gerald turned his head slightly to check on Lauren, only to see she was fast asleep with a magazine in her hand and headphones plugged into her ears, "Lauren is in the room but she's sleeping so I guess it's fine now."

"You're kind of scaring me, is everything okay?"

"Camila, you and I have been friends for a long time now and I just want to know something..Something that can change our lives forever even though it might not happen this very second."

Knitting her eyebrows together, Camila eyed Gerald in confusion. "What's going on?"

"I've just wanted to know something, for a while I guess. I was wonderin-"

"Gerald, I don't think now is the right time to ask me to be your girlfriend."

In response, Gerald leaned backwards and knitted his eyebrows together this time. "What the hell are you talking about, Camila?"

"You made it sound like you were about to ask m-"

"No! I wasn't about to ask you to be my girlfriend! Who do you take me for?" At this point, Gerald began raising his voice and his heartbeat was speeding upright faster and faster.

"Gerald, calm down, please. I just want you calm and at ease."

"Calm down? You want me to calm down when you're over here accusing me of asking you to be my girlfriend. My girlfriend for crying out loud, Camila! I don't want you to be my girlfriend because you're my friend and you're all I have left! Lauren doesn't give a rats ass about me, my mom is gone, my dad is nowhere I know, my brother could care less, and just..you're the only person who attempts to show affection towards me! I don't know why even bother with you because you just leave me to dry. You soak me up with all this love and all this affection but now I know what it was really about. You felt sorry for me and you had no other choice but to pretend to love the sick and dying guy!" Gerald spat, jerking his hand away from Camila's.

The heart monitor began beeping rapidly, and Camila sat up frantically. "Gerald!" She began to cry out, causing Lauren to wake up and fling her phone out of her hand.

"What did you do?!" Lauren screamed, shoving Camila out of the way. Lauren smacked the blue button behind Gerald's headboard.

"Code blue on floor three. Code blue on floor three." The intercom announced, causing multiple doctors and nurses to run into the room and shove the girls out of the way.

"We need a crash cart, now!" A doctor yelled, waving their left arm frantically as a signal to come quickly.

"What happened here?" Another doctor asked, trying to calm both girls.

The noise around Camila began to become faded, there but so quiet it was as if it was happening underwater. Things were moving in slow motion and she didn't know if she should try to run away or try and snap out of the slowness and gain speed again in the normal standards.

"It's all my fault." Camila said in a quiet voice. "It's all my fault. It's all my fault. It's all my fault."

"Don't say that, you didn't do anything." The doctor said soothingly, rubbing her hand on Camila's back as she led both girls out of the room and into the waiting room.

"He's gonna be okay though, right?" Lauren asked, catching her breath.

"I don't know." The doctor replied and the hall fell silent.

It wasn't like the doctor could bluntly say that Gerald was going to die. Of course, she knew but she just didn't want to discuss all the gory details with two girls who claim to be his best friends when one of them is the reason his heart could be killing him as they wait this very second.

"It's all my fault, isn't it?" Camila asked, staring blankly at the wall across from her.

"Don't say that. You don't know anything for sure."

"YOU'RE THE DOCTOR!" Camila barked, snapping her head to face the doctor and express her anger.

"I understand you're upset right now, but blaming yourself and yelling at others will not fix the problem. It's not going to do you any good."

Lauren nodded and Camila did the same. It wasn't like she wanted to snap at the doctor, but how can you blame her? She was the reason Gerald became so angry; all because she had to think the dumbest things of all. How could she be so stupid, stupid enough to act as if she's in middle school and sink to that level of a question?

"It's going to be fine, Camila." Lauren reassured, trying her best to maintain a soothing voice.

Deep down, Camila wanted to believe Lauren. She wanted to believe it was going to be fine, but then again, Lauren is the one who screamed out "What did you do?!"
