Seven weeks.
Camila hasn't seen Gerald in several weeks and it was driving her to insanity. She had no clue whether he was in pain, if he was alone, if he was okay, she didn't know anything about Gerald only because she's too scared to visit him.
When the first week passed, Lauren wasn't surprised. She knew that Camila was most likely holding a grudge, and it's not her fault. Gerald basically threw her out of his face and from the hospital, which makes it difficult to go through with wanting to see him again.
By the time the fourth week passed, Lauren grew worried. It wasn't typical for Camila to hold grudges for longer than even a day, but at this point it was scaring her a bit.
"Hey, we should visit Gerald now, what do you say?" Lauren asked, trying her best to make her voice sound perky and heartfelt.
The only response Camila gave was a glare; mute. It was hard for Lauren to deal with Camila being this way, and she wanted it to end. She wanted the old Camila back and if dragging her to see Gerald would do the trick that's what she's going to do.
Lauren grabbed Camila's hand and made her way to the door when Camila finally spoke up. "Where do you think you're taking me?"
"We're just going out, you know? Lift your spirits and shit." Lauren rolled her eyes, opened the door and made their way to her car.
--
"We are not seeing Gerald!"
"Camila! He's your best friend, get in there and fucking say hello!"
"He's got a song named 'Hello', sure he can hear someone say hello other than me!"
Lauren scuffed and flung open her passenger side door. "We are going and you're going to say hello. God, Camila."
Both girls made their way from the parking lot into the hospital, only to enter the building and see a friendly nurse's face. She appeared to be fairly young, maybe mid-twenties being the highest. Her blonde hair fell over her shoulders, yet it was clear she dyed it since her roots were a dark brown.
As Lauren's eyes scanned the nurse's name tag, she nodded to herself softly and attempted to make herself people pleasing just for Camila's sake. "Hi, uh, nurse Grey. My name's Lauren, and this is Camila. We are both here to see Gerald."
The nurse gave them a funny look, giving Camila a bad vibe immediately. It wasn't an awful look, but it sure wasn't welcoming. "Actually, I'm not a nurse, I'm a doctor. Uh, you're here for Gerald?"
Both girls nodded, almost impatiently. "Alright, he's in the same room he was admitted in, so if you visited him be-"
"We have visited him before, thanks." Lauren threw the words out of her mouth, rushing past the doctor and into Gerald's room.
Entering the room seemed off and out of place for Camila. She hadn't seen Gerald in so long, but her emotions weren't through the roof. She wasn't upset, wasn't angry, wasn't excited, wasn't even happy. Instead, she was emotionless.
Gerald was sleeping softly and quietly. His heart rate monitor was normally beating which Camila was grateful for.
Lauren made her way to the nearest chair, which was bedside to Gerald. "Hey, wake up." Leaning her body forward, Lauren began to poke Gerald softly, careful not to scare him lifelessly.
"J-Jauregui? Is that you?"
"No, it's Cabello."
"Huh?"
"Yes, it's Jauregui! God, calm down."
Gerald sat up and rubbed his eyes, scanning the room once he was done. "Camila, you came."
Camila stepped into the room a bit more since she was barely inside, and sat down on another chair she found which was on the other side of Gerald, across from Camila.
"I didn't want to."
"But you came, that's all I care about."
Scuffing, Camila crossed her arms and rolled her eyes. "That's all you care about? That's all you freaking care about? Gerald, please refresh my memory. Isn't it true you were the one who could care less if I cared about you and wanted to stay in this hospital just to make sure you were okay?"
"I was in distres-"
"In distress? In distress?! The only stress you were in was the fact Lauren and I were in the room trying to help you! How selfish can you be, Gerald?"
"I'm sorry."
Silence fell into the room as Camila took several deep breaths and tried to calm herself down before she said something she would regret. It wasn't in her intentions to yell at Gerald, but all of that was true and she wasn't even done.
"I don't see why you let me come here, you shouldn't have taken me here." Camila said, eyeing Lauren.
"You miss him and you know it."
Camila knew it was true, and she knew Lauren wasn't going to stop until they made up. "Fine." She mumbled, biting her lip for a brief second before speaking up again.
"Gerald, I do miss you. I miss you but you kicked me out when I wanted to stay. You didn't even speak up to let me know you were hurting. You didn't say a word."
"I know and I want to say I'm sorry, okay? I don't know what was going through my head because I just found out about my heart and I was humiliated for the fact I fainted in front of over a hundred people and it's just. Ugh."
"Sorry for being a selfish jerk." Camila mumbled, not wanting to make eye contact with Gerald.
"I was the selfish one and it's not your fault. Seriously, Camila. Let me out own up to this one, for once. I run away from my problems and I never own up to them. Just..Just let me be the one who feels like shit for once, okay?"
Gerald's words sunk slowly into Camila's brain and took a toll on her. Gerald did run away from his problems and he never owned up to his mistakes. It frustrated Camila, but she never expected more from him. She gave him an excuse, almost a pass to be selfish and never learn from his mistakes, but this time was different. This time, she had a sense that he actually felt the need to learn from his mistakes and finally learn what it's like to have something to regret.
"You missed a lot in the seven weeks you didn't come because of me.." Gerald said softly, almost too quiet for both girls to hear.
"What do you mean?"
"One of the nurses said my whole life can be impacted by this problem, even though it's being fixed slowly."
Camila knitted her eyebrows and cocked her head to the side. "How are they fixing it?"
"Telling me to rest a bunch, giving me medication, dosing me up with shit I don't even know the name of."
"You know the name of it, at least they're telling you instead of being mysterious and keeping things from you. You're the patient, you have a right to know what they're giving you medically and just humanly in general." Lauren said, flipping through pages of a magazine.
"Calm down there, politician." Gerald half laughed, smiling a bit.
"How long are you gonna be in here anyway?" Camila asked, feeling more comfortable talking to him once again.
"Few more weeks. They want me to be better and all that shit just in case they get sued."
"Nice interpretation." Lauren said, flipping through another magazine.
"No, the nurse said that."
Camila bursted out laughing, causing Lauren and Gerald to laugh as well. "I'm glad we're all laughing again." Gerald said lowly, frowning afterwards.
"Me too, Gerald. Me too."
