The moment I woke up that morning, I reached to my phone and dialled Garret’s number. “Happy birthday,” I whispered as soon as he answered his phone.
There was a pause from him and then I could almost hear him slowly smile. “You sound husky,” he noticed teasingly. “You sure you don’t want me to come over?”
I snorted and rested my head on the bed’s headboard. “No. I just woke up, though.”
“I figured that out. Thank you, by the way. You know, for greeting me.”
I grinned. “Anyway, do you want to go out for lunch?” Then I realized that sounded way too annoying. “If you don’t have plans, that is.”
Garret seemed to notice my backpedalling. “I don’t. Well, this lunch I’m going to be with my dad. Roxanne’s busy with something, Xayranne and Flynn are not here in Springfield – they seemed to forget it was birthday.”
I sighed internally. If only he knows how they remembered his birthday. Of course, they told him a lie. Xayranne and Flynn were at Roxanne’s house, preparing for tonight. But I didn’t tell him that. I wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise.
“You could join us,” Garret continued.
“Really? Thanks.”
“Oh, before I forget… do you know Jerome officially asked Roxanne to be his girlfriend last night?”
This time, I did sigh. Of course I know about that. Jerome asked me millions of times what to wear, what to say, what to give. Since we’re not together anymore, Jerome has been my best friend. You know, just like Jasper.
“Yep I knew about that,” I replied.
“Aren’t you jealous or a little bit mad?”
“Why would I be? He’s happy, Roxanne’s happy, I’m happy.”
“You’re happy?”
“Yeah. Why shouldn’t I be?”
“Uh, because I’m not your boyfriend?” Garret teased. “Just kidding. So tonight you’ll say you love me and I’ll say I love you and then we’d kiss and live happily ever after?”
I chuckled. “Not so fast. How about Ashley?”
“I broke up with her.”
“You what?!” I screamed in surprise and did a double-take, falling to the floor. When I got back up again, I regained my composure. “You broke up with her and you didn’t tell me?!”
“You’ll know the reason later,” Garret said. He was talking as if he knows something I don’t. Which was the case here.
“Maybe we’re not going to see each other later,” I lied, to keep him talking.
“Nah. You’re going to surprise me, aren’t you?”
I froze. Oh no no no no no. “Surprise you?” I snorted. “That’s the last thing on our minds!”
Garret sighed. “Stop pretending. Do you think I don’t know what you’re doing when all of you are in Roxanne’s place?”
I gave up. “Shit, what give it away?”
“I came by to Flynn and Xayranne’s and caught them talking about it while I’m supposedly babysitting my niece and nephew.”
“Aww, you’re babysitting them?” I cooed sweetly. “That’s cute.”
I could almost imagine seeing Garret with adorable shade of pink on his cheeks. “That’s just because James was sick.”
“Sure, Uncle Garret,” I teased him.
