Melanie's POV
Heather and I were on the middle of taking a selfie picture in the Eiffel Tower when I suddenly got a call from Roxanne back in America that Xayranne was giving birth. We immediately left Paris and booked our flight back to Springfield.
So that kind of explained why Heather and I were in the hospital along with Roxanne, Jerome, Philip, Flynn, Garret, Ashley and my parents. All of us were quiet, just sitting down on the waiting chairs. James and Jennifer were left with Xayranne's aunt. They both knew their mother was giving birth but they have no idea that she was hurting a lot.
I was sitting the farthest away from the group. Garret sat down beside his brother. Flynn had this expression I haven't seen before. It was a mix of horror, happiness and nervousness. I couldn't blame her though. Heather was sitting down beside me and to past the time, she was reading some book in her iPhone. My parents were standing up and facing across me. Xayranne was like their own daughter and I know they're very nervous. Roxanne was sitting on the floor with Jerome, and he was holding her hand. And Ashley... Well, Ashley was just there.
It was all so quiet and when the door of the Delivery Room opened, all of us raised our heads simultaneously. The doctor (who was surprisingly a man) didn't say anything but just smiled. It meant a lot to us and all of us who were waiting gave out a breath of relief. Flynn stood up from his chair, a big smile on his face. "Can I see my wife now, doc?" he asked.
"As a matter of fact, Mr. Stone, she is looking for you," the doctor said and opened the door wider for Flynn. Flynn went in and the doctor followed him in.
Roxanne and Jerome got up from the floor. "I have a new niece, or nephew," Roxanne announced excitedly. "Imagine! James and Jennifer would be so happy with their new sibling!"
"Well, now we know that Xayranne is alive and well, we need to get back to work," Dad said, snaking his arm around Mom's waist. "Tell Xayranne and Flynn our greetings with their new child, will you, Melanie?"
I nodded and bade them farewell. Philip went with them too. Ashley whispered something on Garret's ear and he nodded. She walked away, and when she passed me, she gave me a small smile. I didn't return it because deep inside, I'm still angry with her for stealing Garret from me. Roxanne and Jerome started talking about children and somehow Heather joined in the conversation. So that left Garret and I.
Garret looked at me uneasily and I stared back. We continued doing that for two minutes and then he sat down beside me. After our "last day" together, this was the first time the two of us were going to have a real conversation. Four weeks ago, Heather and I went to Europe just to unwind. We spent Christmas there and we had so much fun. It was just what I needed.
"How are you?" was the first thing he asked me.
"I was sitting here for the past hour and you just noticed me?" I teased him. It never gets tiring when I tease Garret.
He just smiled, that simple smile that only I can get from him. "It was so quiet and it would be awkward if I just ask you out of the blue," he explained and I shrugged in return. "How was Europe?"
"It was fine. Heather and I really had a good time. How about you? Roxanne told me in her email that you were getting ready for the... for the wedding."
Garret frowned. "Roxanne emails you?"
"I email her, asking some news about you and the others. She told me you were preparing for the wedding, but you don't seem too thrilled with it," I said quietly, so that Roxanne and the others wouldn't hear me.
"Well, what do you expect? I'm going to be married with someone I don't love," Garret said bluntly.
I sighed. I should have expected that he was going to say something like that. Still, I know Ashley was an important person to her and the least he could do was to make her happy. And sometimes Garret's the most dense person in the whole wide world and he doesn't see Ashley's real feelings for him.
