Garret's POV
I parked my car outside Melanie's driveway. I killed the engines but I didn't go out immediately. I raised my head and looked at Melanie's window. As if on cue, Melanie opened the curtains, still wearing her pajamas. She smiled that beautiful smile of hers, the one that drives me crazy. I know it sounded cheesy, but hell... Melanie's just perfect.
She didn't look down, thankfully. She walked away, maybe she's going to take a shower or something. Nervously, I walked out of my car and made my way to the front porch. I know I shouldn't be spending time with Melanie. It would just hurt her if I keep her leading on. After all, I'm going to marry Ashley. Not because I love her more than Melanie. I'm going to marry Ashley because I need to. She's bearing my child and I have to take care of her and my child's future.
But Ashley's right. I need to spend one last day with Melanie. I can't just leave her as if nothing happened. Five years I have waited for her. Five years wasted. And now that we have each other... this has to come up. Maybe this was some sort of punishment someone gave me for all of my mistakes at the past. Or maybe someone's punishing me for the mistakes of my mother.
I took a deep breath and reluctantly pressed the doorbell. I waited for two seconds before the door opened by Jerome. He was wearing a smile when he opened the door but then it faded when he saw me. It turned into a menacing scowl. "What are you doing here? Melanie had enough. You don't need to mess up her life more."
"I'm not trying to--"
"Save your explanations to yourself, Stone. Go away before she sees you. We're trying to help her cope in this problem of hers. We don't need you here. Go back to Ashley and take care of your own family."
"Jerome, please," I pleaded. I do understand why Jerome's acting like this. If I was on his place, I wouldn't let me in too. "I know I can't be together with her again. But Ashley told me to spend one last day with her. It would help the both of us."
"Spend one last day? What for?"
"I'm going to marry someone else, Jerome."
"I am completely aware of that," he said acidly.
"I will never have the chance to spend a day with Melanie ever again. That's why I'm going to take this chance. I will have the time to say goodbye to her. If you were on my place, you'd do it too, won't you?"
This time, Jerome seemed to give in. He sighed and then opened the door wider for me to step in. I gave out a sigh of relief and then walked in. Jerome closed he door and he told me to sit down on the couch. "I'll get her," he told me. "It would be such a surprise if you go upstairs yourself."
"Okay," I said and sat down on the couch.
Jerome left to go upstairs when Heather came out of the kitchen. She was eating an apple as she was walking. When she saw me, instead of glaring at me and screaming that I was such an asshole for leaving Melanie, she smiled. "Hi," she greeted me.
I smiled gratefully. "Hey."
"So, what are you doing here?" she asked, sitting down on the armchair opposite of me. "Are you going to see Melanie? Confess that you can't live without her and you left Ashley for her?"
"Not exactly... But I can't live without her."
Heather blinked. "I totally lost you there for a moment. Let's change the topic. Do you know if your child is a guy or a girl?"
I shrugged. "We don't want to know yet. Ashley wanted it to be a surprise."
She seemed quiet after that. I stared at her, trying to read her eyes. But Heather's smart. She was looking at me in the eyes, but she wouldn't let me read her. Then she leaned closer to me and asked me quietly, "Do you even know if Ashley is actually pregnant?"
