When Garret’s car arrived on the driveway, I broke out into a smile. Just the thought of him being near makes me smile. He rolled down his window, revealing his grinning face. “What are you waiting for? I thought you want me to be quick?” he said.
I just rolled my eyes and practically jumped from my seat. I ran to his car and threw open the passenger’s seat. I went in and slammed the door shut. “Good, I thought I’ll die with boredom back there.”
“So why… why did you exactly call me?” he asked and started the engine. “You could’ve called Roxanne or someone.”
“Roxanne’s the one who’s keeping Jerome preoccupied.”
“Um… did I hear you just right?” Garret looked over me, an adorable frown on his face. “Roxanne’s the one who’s keeping Jerome preoccupied?”
“Exactly,” I said with a nod.
“But…”
“Roxanne kind of likes Jerome and Jerome gets very red whenever Roxanne’s around,” I explained.
“And you’re completely fine with it? You don’t feel jealous or anything?”
I shrugged and strapped my seatbelt. “Nope. Maybe a little. I really don’t feel jealous with the two of them.” You and Ashley on the other hand…
“Why do you think you’re not jealous?” Garret inquired. “I mean, if Ashley’s flirting with another guy I’d totally be jealous.”
“That’s different. Maybe you love Ashley more than I love Jerome,” I told him, not meeting his eyes.
“Oh” was all he said.
“So,” I said, changing the subject, pasting a smile on my face, “where are we going?”
Garret smiled and butterflies suddenly started to form inside my stomach. Oh my God, how can Garret make smiling so handsome? The way he leaned back on his seat, one hand on the steering wheel, the other lying on his sides lazily, his messy dirty blonde hair styled perfectly, his grey-blue eyes twinkling… made my heart rate go faster.
“Remember that carnival? The one where Jasper was with us?” he said, his voice nostalgic. “It was one of those days…”
“Yes, I remember… Don’t tell me we’re going there…” I said, forming a grin.
“We’re going there,” Garret said with a big hearty laugh. “I was driving to your house when I suddenly saw the carnival. It’s their last night so it’s a great timing, don’t you think?”
“Yeah,” I said and smiled. “You know… that was the first night when you said you like me.”
“Oh you still remember!”
I gave him a look. “I’m not that old, you know. I can remember.” Then I gave him a superior smirk. “And when we were on our way back to Springfield, I heard you and Jasper talk. You said that you like me and that Jasper should just leave me alone. You totally sound so jealous.”
He rolled his eyes. “And so what if I feel like that?”
“You were head over heels for me,” I teased.
“Yes, I was,” he said and turned to me. His grey-blue eyes locked to mine. “And I still am.”
We continued staring at each other right in the eyes. Then I cleared my throat and looked away. On the corner of my eye, I saw him sigh and then turned back to the road. “We’re not that far away now,” he said quietly.
“Cool,” I replied with the same tone.
After fifteen minutes, we arrived at the carnival. Garret and I hopped out of his car. I gazed at the carnival and a smile formed on my face. It was just like the one five years ago. It was only six in the evening, yet there are lots of people. Most of them were couples, holding hands. Others were groups of friends, having a good time. And some were family, enjoying the Sunday night.
