22. hike to 3 different waterfalls

23. walk behind a waterfall

24. trek a mountain

My feet plod one in front of the other, my sneakers breaking twigs on every step, dried bracken on every second. My hands are fisted in the pockets of my puffy jacket, chin tucked under the thick scarf around my neck against the chilly air.

"You guys really know how to pick the days don't you."

"Oh cut it out, Jase. Yes, it's cold, we know," Lea snapped. "Don't be such a baby."

"It's 10am and we're halfway up the side of a mountain! I'm literally breathing in the clouds!"

"It's fog, you ass."

"What's the difference? They're both cold and damp."

"That's the dew."

"Last time I checked my whole body was damp, not just my feet, Lea," Jase bit back.

"You are my sun-shine, my only sun-shine, you make me happyyyy when clouds are greyyyy," I sang.

"Shut up, Fiche."

"Why? If I don't wannnt tooooo, I don't havvvve tooooo, you should knooooooow thissssss byyyyy nowwwww," I continued to the tune.

"Oh, my god, you are so annoying!" Jase whined.

"What do you expect?"

"You not to be, but I realise this is improbable, so."

"Yeah, well, we have to listen to you whine and complain about the cold. Like seriously. It's so nice to be surrounded by nature, and stroll through the peaceful stillness of an early morning, the fog a comforting blanket making you feel more at home. To be so refreshed by the crisp, fresh air, the mist enhancing the scent of the eucalyptus, the earthy, woody scents of the ground. It's so comfor-"

Jase's hand cut me off mid-sentence, holding me hostage against his chest.

"You just don't know when to stop, do you?"

"Look who's talking!" Sean laughed.

"Hey, hey, man, come on."

Lea rolled her eyes and stalked across the space to grab my hand and peel Jase's off my face. Then she stalked off again, me in tow, up the path.

"Let's leave these overgrown toddlers to themselves, shall we? Before one of them starts crying for mummy," she called over her shoulder.

That was undoubtably meant for my idiot brother.

I heard a thump and a "That's my girlfriend," behind us and could only imagine what signs- or fingers- Jase had been holding up to Lea's retreating back.

I breathed in some crisp, fresh mountain air, and sighed.

It was going to be a long day.

*********

It was well past lunchtime by the time we arrived at the last waterfall, the largest of the three on the mountain, in that it actually had a pool big enough to swim in. The other ones were nice, but you couldn't really do anything but admire them.
