Chapter 12

The Monsters of Stone

Rose Tyler (POV)

__________________________

"What now?" Natalie asked, as soon as Harry, the Doctor, Jack and Rapunzel disappeared up the stairs, (Rapunzel leaving a trail of her hair behind).

"How about Ron, me, and Rose go to the basement, and you, and Mr. Monk search this floor." Hermione said.

"Sounds good." Rose said, nodding.

"Wait, wait a minute." Mr. Monk said, holding up his hand, "You mean I'll be alone. Alone searching this floor."

"Mr. Monk! I'll be here!" Natalie exclaimed.

Mr. Monk stared at her for a few seconds, and then turned back to Hermione, "So I'll be alone?"

"Mr. Monk!" Natalie said reproachfully.

"What?! I'm always doing the work!" Mr. Monk exclaimed.

"You're doing all the work?!" Natalie exclaimed, "What about that time that guy Jake chained our feet to the leg of the bathtub during that murder case of that old man?! I was the only one that was dragging it!"

"The floor was dirty!" Mr. Monk cried, "Anyway, it's your job!"

"No it isn't! Me doing all the hard work wasn't in the job description!" Natalie exclaimed.

"You're doing all the hard work?! I'm the one that's solving all the cases! -"

"Oi!" Rose cried, breaking up the fight, "Have you forgotten what we're supposed to be doing?!"

"No, you three are searching the basement, while me and Natalie search this floor." Mr. Monk replied, "I never forget anything."

"Alright then, see ya." Rose said, going down the steps to the basement.

"Bye." Mr. Monk said.

The basement was pitch black. Rose flipped the switch. The lights glowed briefly, and then flickered off. She kept flipping the switch, but the lights didn't turn back on. "That's weird." Rose muttered.

"Scary more like it." Ron said, "Were those running off, ekelicity?"

"You mean electricity?" Hermione sighed, and the tip of her wand glowed, giving them a bit of light.

"Yeah...that's what I meant." Ron said, the tip of his wand glowing too, giving them more light.

"I'm sure you did." Hermione said, rolling her eyes, while raising her wand, so they could see more of the room. The light landed on a stone statue of an angel, that had its face in its hands.

"What's that doing here? Don't they usually put those outside?" Ron asked confused.

"Maybe they're repainting it." Hermione suggested, turning to look around the room, "Ron, why don't you stay here, while Rose and I search more of the room."

"Sure, shout if you find anything." Ron replied.

"See you later then." Rose said, over her shoulder as she and Hermione progressed further down the basement.

"Wow, this basement is huge." Rose stated, once Ron's beam of light was out of sight, and they were in a completely different room.

"Yeah, it is. This is going to take a while." Hermione said, her wand light sweeping the room.

"Another stone angel?" Hermione said, eyebrows raised, as the light landed on a stone angel that had its face in its hands, "How many of them do they have?"

"No idea-" Rose started, but was cut off by a faint whimpering that seemed to be coming from a wardrobe on their right.

"What was that?" Hermione said, turning to the wardrobe.

"Not sure." Rose said, approaching the wardrobe cautiously, her hand reaching for the handle.

"Be careful!" Hermione whispered fearfully, and Rose's hand closed around the handle. Rose pulled open the door, and stepped back a few paces as a little girl with short blonde hair come toppling out of the wardrobe. The girl gave a frightened squeak, and tried to scurry back in the closet.

"It's alright! It's alright!" Hermione said, kneeling next to the little girl, giving her a reassuring smile, "We're not going to hurt you!" The girl stopped scurrying, and looked at them with eyes filled with fear.

"What's your name?" Rose asked kindly, kneeling next to the girl. The girl gave her a frightened look.

"Sophie." She squeaked.

"Hi Sophie. I'm Hermione, and this is Rose." Hermione said, introducing them, "We're here to help. Now what's wrong?" Sophie rocked backward and forward glancing around the room, until her eyes landed on something over Rose's shoulder.

"Them." Sophie whispered, fearfully. Following her gaze, Hermione and Rose turned to look at the stone angel.

"The statue?" Hermione asked, confused turning back to Sophie, while Rose kept her eyes on the stone angel. Was it just her, or was that statue closer than it was before?

"They're- they're not statues." Sophie shivered, "They're monsters of stone."

"Monsters?" Rose said, peeling her eyes off of the angel.

"Yes. When you're not looking at them, they become monsters. When you are looking at them, they become stone." Sophie squeaked, glancing at Rose, and then back over her shoulder. Her small eyes widened, and she gasped, backing up with her back against the wardrobe. Rose and Hermione whipped around, to find that the stone angel was no longer there.

"Where'd it go?!" Rose exclaimed, looking wildly around the room.

"Hermione?! Rose?!" Ron called, rounding the corner, with a terrified expression on his face, glancing behind him every few seconds.

"Ron? What is it?" Hermione asked, concerned.

"You know that stone angel? It's not th-" Ron started to say, turning to face them, then stopped mid-sentence. He had a look of horror on his face, as he stared at something over Rose and Hermione's heads.

"What? What is it?" Rose asked, glancing at Sophie to find that she too had a look of horror on her face, and was staring at something over their heads. Slowly, Rose and Hermione turned around. Right above them, were the stone angels. But they had jagged teeth, and claws, and had terrifying expressions on their faces. Rose wasn't sure which one of them did it, but one of them let out an ear-piercing scream.
