"As we all know, self-defense is an extremely important task to understand. When you understand the concept of self-defense and are ready to act upon it, not only will you become more physically relaxed, but mentally too." Droned Coach Bethany, our Self-Defense teacher.
Self-Defense class was a special compulsory class that students from classes 3-4 took. It taught us the art of fighting, and the different concepts of defending ourselves which brought out the inner soul as much as the outer one.
Self-defense has been something I've always wished upon learning because it really was something I needed in the past. If I'd learned how to defend myself and fight back awhile back, I wouldn't have been in this school in the first place.
But, to be completely honest, this school was much better than my home. I had an amazing friend here and well, perhaps more to come.
"The concept of self-defense is very simple. Endellion, Cecily, come up here and demonstrate while explaining," Coach Bethany smiled at us, Delly and I were her favorite students after all.
The pair of us made our way to the front of the gymnasium, shaking hands out of tradition and respect.
Delly started, "we will demonstrate a scene where I am the attacker and Cecily is victim." She looked at me for consent, which I replied to with an encouraging smile.
"A very common scenario in which self-defense is needed is the Shirt Grab. Basically, your shirt gets grabbed like this," she swung her right arm to my shirt and grabbed it, curling her left hand into a fist and pointing it at me.
It was now my turn to speak, "so basically, what you have to do if in a similar situation is to come around, trap the arm, come through, trap the arm until it gets downward and follow up with a kick or a punch with your other arm."
Bringing my left hand through Delly's right hand, I twisted it through to my chest, and then twisted it out causing her arm to become trapped and her knees to buckle from the pressure on her arm. I quickly followed up with a bending of my right foot, tapping it lightly into her left knee- resulting in her falling and me freeing myself.
The class erupted into claps. Coach Bethany seemed delighted and said, "Very well girls. You may go back to your designated spots. Now class, pair up into two and carry out on doing exactly what the girls did." She said then added, "Cecily and Endellion will supervise and fix your postures and stances while I run up real quick to get my record book." And with that, she left.
The class began pairing up and started working. Delly and I went here and there to fix their movements and postures. I kept helping others until I saw Cobra and Luther following up the movements perfectly.
I was about to look away when something caught my eye, Cobra did the hand twist extra strong and was a second away from breaking Luther's arm- all without noticing.
Rushing over to them, I slowly loosened Cobra's hand as he was about to do the second twist. He stared at questioningly and I said, "You shouldn't be too harsh- this is only training. If you use too much force you could break his arm."
Cobra glared at me while Luther smirked, "Chill, Cindy, he wasn't going to break my arm."
Cobra looked at Luther and I could've sworn I heard him say something along the lines of, "her name's Cecily."
