Hayden's P. O. V
I wake up at the furthest edge of the territory, in the back corner where a barbed wire fence protected the lands beyond from an onslaught of werewolves. And I was bleeding. I roll onto my back with a groan. Everywhere hurt. My back, my legs, my head—it had been a long time since I had a headache. There was no accompanying rush of healing fever. Just pain. I sit up to look at myself in the blue light of dawn. My body was a mess of scrapes and tears. How was that even possible? Weirdly, the ache was kind of... good. I had the kind of heavy, satiated feeling I enjoyed after devouring a deer as a wolf. But there were no prey animals on the territory, and I obviously hadn't escaped. It made no sense. Someone else groaned. I twist to find Bryce laying a few feet away. He looked a lot like I did—naked and bleeding. But he hadn't woken up yet. "Oh my God,"I said, crawling to his side. His shoulder was torn open, and the skin was ragged all the way down his chest. A ring of puncture marks on his arm formed the shape of teeth. Wounds inflicted by the Alpha didn't heal as quickly as those delivered by another wolf. Which meant that I must have ripped him open the night before. I squeeze my eyes shut and struggled to remember what had happened, but nothing came to mind. I had the impression of body clashing against body, a struggle in the grass, the rush of adrenaline—but that was it. A fight between us would have explained what happened to him. But what had happened to me?
Bryce's P. O. V
I had waken up sometime after Hayden and she averted her eyes immediately. I slip into the house through the back and found the small closet filled with robes. I slip into one and throw one to her. I stagger in, my entire body hurting. I knew Hayden wasn't in better shape than me. We walk into the kitchen and find everyone there. "Hayden!" Tess cries and hugs her close. "We thought you died!" Dawson says and hugs her. I could feel a burning gaze and I look up into Hayden's eyes. She was looking at me though she was having a conversation with my brothers. That's when everyone looks at us both. Their eyes widened into huge circles. "Why aren't you healing?" "We don't know," We answer. "We really don't know."
After we got dressed, Dawson sent us straight to Abel again. And now here we were sitting in a hospital room. He looks between us, an unfamiliar look in his eyes. "You don't know do you?" He asks and we shake our heads. "Hayden, you lost your Alpha position. Bryce, welcome to being the new Dark Moon Alpha." Abel says. "WHAT?!" Hayden and I both exclaim at the same time. "Easy on the ears." Abel flinches and I take deep breaths. "How is that even possible?" I ask and she nod. "Last night. When you went bat-shit crazy when you were poisoned by silver. You two hashed it out on the ridge by the pond. Bryce, you had Hayden down but she tried to knock you over and pin you to the ground the same way you had her. And one thing lead to another." He says and with huge circles for eyes, Hayden looks at me. "Are you saying, that our wolves...?" She chokes out and he nods. My heart jumps up and makes a lump in my throat. "You're lying!" I growl, standing up. "No I'm not. But she can't get pregnant. She's not in heat." Abel's voice trails off at the end of the sentence. "I was when they arrived. It ended about half a week after." She says and he looks between us. "I'd be preparing." He says and turns to his computer. "Hayden, I'd like to keep tabs on you. Come everyday whenever you want, just come." She nods. "Bryce, choose your Beta, Third, and Fourth." Abel says and I nod. "Come on. I think right now would be good." He says and we walk out and into the center of the compound. "Dark Moon Pack! Come!" Abel yells and everyone makes a circle around us. "We have a new Alpha among us. He defeated Hayden Lupei in a dominance challenge and has claimed the right as Alpha. Welcome, Bryce Evans as Alpha of the Dark Moon Pack!" Abel says and everyone drops to one knee. "My Beta will be Andrei. My Third will be Hayden. My Fourth will be Garrett." I say and I notice Garrett has a huge grin on his face. Hayden dips her head to me, and I nod. "Tonight we have a feast in their honor!" Abel says and I hold a hand up. "No feast. Just let them adjust to their new positions." I say and Abel nods. I nod and everyone goes back to what they were doing. "Come on." I command and Hayden lowers her head in submission. She follows me to the house and once the door closes behind us, my index finger tilts her chin up. "You don't have to submit to me, Hayden. Our wolves have chosen each other, even if we haven't chosen each other as mates. My wolf finds you as his equal, as I know yours has as well. But to tell you the truth, what I... feel... for you... is nothing that I've ever felt before. But I can tell you want my brother, not me. So I'll back off and leave you both alone. I won't try and force you using my power. I'm letting you choose between us." I say and she stays silent. "Truth be told, I don't know who I want. You both are great guys, and I'm drawn to both of you. But after what Abel said today, I'm edgy. I don't know what the effects of last night will be or what will happen between the three of us because of it. I just know that I don't know who will fix my broken heart."
