It made sense a minute ago, I had perfect clarity. Now I have no idea why I killed eighteen demons. I'm no murderer yet I feel little remorse. They did evil things, followed Darkness. Does that justify their deaths?
I let Viper go; someone had to let Laufeia know what happened to her minions.
Reason cleared their bodies out and I cleaned their blood off my hands. But their invisible blood remained. I killed someone. Eighteen someone's.
The first kills are always the most difficult.
The first? I'm expected to do more of this?
With a shrug I shut down the idea. Duh! A war is coming up; we'll all be forced to kill.
I feel myself slipping and immediately wave my hand and water is in front of me. I allow it to do its job and cleanse me, mainly my soul. I sigh in sweet pleasure and straighten my shoulders.
"What's a Black Eagle?" I question to help ease my mind.
Their eyes look at me tentatively, as if the wrong glance would shatter me.
"Guys, I'm fine."
"Melody, remind me to kiss your ass more often." Kyle laughed, patting my shoulder.
"The White and Black Eagles, two of the oldest forms of Light and Darkness." Juto said.
"Really?" Zane asked, eyes darting all over the room, never settling for too long.
"Really. Rarely do they enter our real, or any realm, in the flesh. They prefer to send others to do their work." Juto went on, going back to sit on his thrown. He was watching every move I made with the utmost care.
Aliyah picked up the story, "Summon either of them and you'll have to pay a high price. But it's best not to call upon either at any time."
"Plus, summoning one is bad considering it won't always want to leave when it should, trying to get everything it can from you. Which leads to summoning the other to get rid of the one you already have, and naturally that means more payment." Jordan never stops pacing when his brain is working.
Ester grabbed Jordan's sleeve and yanked him to a halt, "What do you mean by payment?"
"Exactly that. Both Eagle's live in a place no one knows or has ever seen. To evoke just one means great power, but why call upon it in the first place? Because you need help, a favor. In the world it's all about balance. To ask for a favor you must give one." Jordan spoke like a teacher and smacked Ester's hands away so he could continue pacing.
"Bright minds," Juto commented, "For Laufeia to have called the Black Eagle,"
"Means we're fucked." Dmitri said, sitting on the floor and chewing on his fingernails.
"How is she paying him?" Vivian looked at Jordan.
He took a second then snapped his fingers, "Through the chaos she's causing."
"Light thrives on love, happiness, joy. Darkness wants chaos, madness, evil." Ali added.
"The worse things get,"
"The happier Darkness is,"
"The longer the Black Eagle will stay with Laufeia,"
"But if the chaos stopped,"
"It'll leave her!"
We stare blankly at Aliyah and Jordan, who were being geniuses and finishing each other's sentences.
