I wake up to Edward kissing my forehead and saying 'I love you'. I mumble it back quickly before I fall back asleep.
Screaming, I sit straight up, sweat dripping from my head, and my hands clenched tightly. Another nightmare. This time, it was because the Volturi killed me and Jake because they found out that I'm not becoming a vampire, due to me choosing Jacob.
I stand up quickly, and pace out to the kitchen, drinking a big glass of water. I understand why I had a nightmare, it's due to the stress I've put myself under. But why was I dreaming of my being with Jacob, again?
I have to hear his voice. I call him quickly, and he answers on the second ring.
"Bella?"
"Jake, hi, I just needed to hear you say something, to know that you are okay," I sigh a breath of relief.
"To know that I'm okay? Bella, what's wrong? Did Edward do something?"
"No, he left early this morning. I just had a bad dream," I admit. I can't keep lying to Jake, especially lying about something as foolish as a dream.
"Another bad dream?" He sighs. I can tell he feels bad for me. "But wait, you said Edward left you there?"
"Yeah, why?"
"He just left you there, by yourself?" Jacob sounds aggravated.
"I'm with my mother too," I say.
"She can't protect you from leeches," he uses leeches as if it is synonymous to vampires. He is definitely aggravated.
"Jake, calm down, Leonard is going to Forks, not Jacksonville."
"And what if he tracks you to Jacksonville, huh?"
"Jake, chances are that my scent trail would be gone, and I don't think being on an airplane would leave a trail anyhow."
Jacob sighs again. "I'm sorry for getting mad, Bella."
"Hey, it's okay. I understand why you were upset, I actually take it as a compliment that you were so worried about me."
"Bella, you know that I am always worried about you. Every second, of every day."
I guess I never realized that he actually does think about me nonstop. I feel myself blush. "Alright, well I'm going to go Jake. I'll call you later today or tomorrow."
"Okay," he pauses. "Call me soon."
"Bye, Jake."
"Talk to you soon."
And the conversation is over. Hearing him talk made my heart lighten, and feel more at ease. I never knew peace was possible within my body just by hearing someone's voice.
Is it wrong of me to find comfort in talking to Jake shortly after Edward leaves? I didn't mean it in that way. I just needed clarification that he really was alive, even though I knew he'd still be alive.
Okay, I think, what is on the agenda for today?
If I could fake going out in public to please Alice, I would. But I know that she is watching me, and expecting me to make my stay here the best I can. I don't think going for a quick walk around the neighborhood will please her either, so I actually need to go somewhere.
I grab my phone and dial my mother's number, but it goes straight to voicemail. I try again, and a third time, but the same thing happens. She never has her phone charged.
I know she would have left her work number somewhere for me, and my assumption is correct when I find it on the refrigerator.
"Hello, Renee speaking," she answers.
"Hey mom, I was just wondering when you'll be out of work."
"Oh, hi honey. Uh," I hear some pages flip. "I can hurry through the rest of my work and be out at noon if you'd like."
I look at the clock, it's eleven. "That would be cool."
"Okay," I can almost hear the smile. I never ask her for more time with her like this. "I love you."
"Love you too," and I hang up.
So, now that I have someone to distract me from my mind, what are we going to do? I'm not into the physical things, like surfing and sports, but I'm also not a movie theater kind of person. And it's raining, so that limits my options.
I finally decide (after half an hour) to go to the Museum of Science and History. Although a stroll around the museum doesn't sound that interesting to me, and it doesn't exactly sound like my mom's cup of tea, it gives us something better to do than watch the rain, or watch another movie.
This will be my first day out with my mother in what seems like a century.
My phone rings, and it's a caller I don't recognize. Although the area code is 360, which is the Forks area code.
"Hello?" I say, questioningly.
"Bella," I hear Billy's rough, old voice say.
"Oh, uh, hi Billy. How are you?"
"Bella," he says again, breathing heavily. Something is wrong. How does he have my number? And why would he be calling me?
"Bella, Leonard came early," he starts explaining. My stomach twists into thousands upon thousands of knots.
"And?" I ask warily, expecting more detail.
"Jacob, he's..."
"Billy, no... Please tell me he's okay." I start clenching my fist. I don't know what to expect him to say next, but I know it isn't good.
"He's been bitten."
No... No... No, no, no, no. This can't be happening. Jacob, a wolf, has been bitten by a vampire. This is catastrophic. He is going to die.
I throw my phone to the ground, letting out a gut-wrenching scream. My hands tremble immensely, and my knees wobble as though they are going to give out from underneath me.
I start running to my car, one that I got when I was sixteen, stomping through the mud puddles. My knees do end up giving out, but I get up immediately and grab my door handle. I'm taking the next flight back to Washington, but there's one thing that's stuck in my mind.
Jacob is probably already dead.
