Denzel's dad just came from work and we finished eating dinner.
"Mr. Curry." I said awkwardly while he watched a basketball game on the TV.
"Yes?" He smiled.
"Um, I appreciate all that you and your wife have done for me but I'm really homesick right now. Really." I frowned.
"You wanna go back to New York?!" Denzel asked. He sat next to his dad on the couch while I stood in the doorway in my pajamas.
"Yeah, I just want my life to go back to normal. I don't really like Carol City to be honest. It's intimidating and I'm scared to go past the mailbox."
Denzel's dad laughed and paused the basketball game. "Come sit Toni."
I wedged between them. "Yeah?"
"Listen Toni. I understand you and if you really want to go back to Harlem I'll pay for your plane ticket and you'll reunite with your grandma but I'm worried about you safety."
"Me too." Denzel said.
"It's a predictable place if Ricky or whatever his name is, is looking for you. That'll be the first place. Why don't you stay with us for a while? We'll make sure you're safe, especially Denzel since he will always be with you. Mom and I will be at work." He patted my back.
"I know but I just wanna see how grandma is doing. I didn't even have the decency to visit her before we ran away."
Mr. Curry hugged me. "Don't overthink alright? You're a grown woman now and I'm sure she'll understand that you have things to do."
"I should've told her that Rakim forced us to go to California. I'm so stupid! I had multiple chances to let her know." I held in my tears. "Look where my dumbass choices got us and what things? I literally have nothing right now! No car, no phone, no family. Nothing!"
"You have us." Denzel said.
"I do but this doesn't feel right. I don't want to be here and get into more drama with Juggy, Melissa and all those other niggas. I wanna go back home and get my life back!" My voice cracked and I flew into Denzel's arms.
"Toni, we can't let you go, we're worried about your safety. Please just stay with us for a little bit." Denzel hugged me tightly.
Mr. Curry frowned and munched on the peanuts he had in a bowl on the floor. "We'll give you anything to make you feel at home."
"Materialistic things won't change how I feel." I stormed out of the living room into the bedroom.
The rain tapped the windows and the thunder shook the house along with lightning lighting up the room.
Crying makes me feel like a bitch and all I want to do is go to bed with the rain and thunder lulling me to sleep.
I just want to dream to get away from reality.
