After what happened with Jay the other day, I was really determined to keep him in my sight all day today. That started when he came over to my house that morning.
The usual unyielding knocking rung on my door and my mom answered.
"Hi, hon. Cookies and milk?" I heard her ask.
"No, thank you Mrs.Bloom, I'm on a diet," he answered back.
Without my mom calling me down, I skipped down the stairs to meet Jay.
"Hi, Amber," he called.
I smiled at him. A fox like smile with my eyes shut.
My mom packed Oreos, Skittles and a pair of milkshakes for us then we got going.
As we walked to school, there was this unusual silence. Usually, we would tease each other and laugh and joke but this morning, the connection was just...not there. I hoped it was just a one off thing.
***Afternoon***
That noon, Jay and I were in the music room joking about. He was on the guitar and I was fooling around with the piano, struggling with Lukas Graham's '7 Years'. I made it sound like 'Views From The Six.' So yeah, we had our connection back.
Just then, Sharon walked in with this guy who had weird maroon hair and had shades on.
I looked at Jay. He was dropping the guitar now, and dusting non-existent dirt off his denim jeans.
He walked over to Sharon and her friend and gave the guy a high five.
"Ivan!" He called.
Obviously, I had missed something.
Jay spun round and gestured towards me.
"My manners, this is my best friend, Amber." Even him calling me his best friend wasn't cooling me down.
That Ivan guy stepped foward and raised a hand, "Yeah, she's the one Rae was telling me about earlier."
He waved at me, "You sounded really nice. You could join us." Was he hitting on me?!
I blushed slightly then it boiled off my cheeks. 'Us?'
"Jay?"
"I forgot to tell you, Sharon, Ivan and I are going to the park this afternoon."
How could he?
I drew him towards me and called to Ivan and Sharon, "Give me a sec."
I dragged Jay behind the piano and whisper-screamed "What the hell?"
Jay shrugged.
"What're you doing going off with these strangers?"
"Not strangers. We're in the same home room."
"That isn't the point. What happened to Amber and Jay against the world?"
"That's exactly it. Amber and Jay. You're not the only individual I can relate with. I'm just hanging out with them for an afternoon, no need to get jealous!" He rolled 'jealous'.
My cheeks went hot. Unshed tears welled up in my eyes.
"I am not jealous! You wanna go out hang out with Shade-boy and Blondie, be my guest!" I yelled at him, I had never done that to him or anyone before.
He shook his head and walked away, calling, "Sorry, guys. Just had to sort out some stuff."
Jealous. I had never been jealous of anyone. What is jealousy. Was it the burning passion I had to keep Jay away from Ivan and Sharon? Was it...was it?
I was jealous, but why? That was when it hit me. I loved my best friend.
