The next day, Phil got off the bus and started toward the school. That day was the day that they would receive their results for the placement test.
The thought made Phil shudder, he didn't want to know what he'd gotten.
Upon entering his classroom, he sat near the door.
Dan wandered in with a scowl on his face, sketchbook under his arm. He sat a few desks down, and Phil frowned to himself. Phil had thought he could maybe find a friend in the mysterious boy, but he guessed he was wrong.
Dan went to drawing away, then looked up and glanced around. Seeing Phil, he went red and continued drawing before Phil could offer a wave.
Sighing, the black-haired boy went to writing his notes from the board.
"Hey," Dan muttered, sliding into the seat next to Phil. Phil jumped, looking over at the boy and holding his chest.
"Hey. You scared me," Phil replied.
"Sorry not sorry," Dan joked, not a trace of a smile on his face. He held the cover to his sketchbook up in Phil's direction, blocking his art.
A tall boy walked in, sauntering by. He looked down at Dan, who was glaring up at him, and gave a little lunge to frighten him.
Dan jumped a bit, then lowered his head to continue his drawing. The bully walked off, laughing with his friends.
"Why do you let them treat you like that, Dan?" Phil asked, frowning.
Dan shrugged and shut his sketchbook, "I don't know. He isn't worth my time."
"But that's not nice," Phil said.
"Don't worry about me. I'm fine," he snapped.
Phil went silent and turned toward the front of the classroom. The teacher instructed the class on their assignment, then began passing out test results. Dan was still drawing, ignoring the teacher in every way.
"I'm sorry," Dan muttered, his hand stopping the small strokes he was making.
