Months later...
Fingers intertwined, Dan and Phil walked out of the agency together. Both clothed in suits and hair combed, it was obvious they meant business. With Dan being the only one to have a job, they were lucky to have gotten an interview at all. Now all there was left was to wait.
"Phew. I'm sure glad that's over," Dan chuckled, wiping his forehead with his free hand.
Phil nodded, letting out a shaky breath, "Me, too."
"Do you really think they'll let us adopt her?" Dan asked, staring down at his shoes.
Thinking, Phil remained silent. After a few minutes he replied, "Probably not. But we can only hope, Dan. I've been looking forward to this for... Forever. As long as I've known you."
"Let's not forget you were the one who moved in, and I was the one who drew creepy drawings of you. Snazzy relationship," Dan said sarcastically, kicking his feet.
"Let's just go home, Dan," Phil chuckled. As soon as the door opened, Phil rushed for the bedroom and flopped down on the neatly made bed. "It was nice of your parents to give us that wedding gift, you know?"
Dan snorted, "You mean buying a flat for us? One that was better than our last? Yeah, tell me about it." Slowly, he walked into the room and leaned on the doorway. "I think we'll get her."
"No, we probably won't. I told you," Phil sighed, looking up at him.
Dan rolled his eyes, "Don't be so negative, Lester- I mean Howell."
"Oh, be quiet, Howell," He laughed, smiling down at the rings on his finger.
"You know that's not how I play, Phil," Dan chuckled. "Now, help me finish the nursery, please. We can't even house a baby without a nursery."
Groaning, the black-haired man stood and approached his husband, pecking him on the lips before exiting. Dan followed after him, walking into the new room. Pink lined the walls, stuffed animals littered the floor, and boxes of furniture parts awaited construction.
"Okay, we need to get the crib up for sure. Then the dresser and changing table, as well as the playpen," Phil sighed.
The two began pounding the furniture together, sweating profusely in the summer heat. Suddenly, from across the flat, the phone began to ring. Both pairs of eyes shot up to catch each other's attention, jaws hanging open.
"Don't get excited. It's probably just my mother," Dan said, jumping up and calmly walking out of the room. As soon as Phil couldn't see him, he dashed for the home phone in the kitchen. "Hello, Howell residence." Phil walked out of the room and stared longingly at Dan, who held up a finger. "Yes. Yes, thank you. Of course we're ready," Dan said, a little more excitedly than he'd thought. "Tomorrow? I suppose that works. Yes, we'll have everything ready. Thank you so much, ma'am."
With the phone replaced, Dan leaned on the kitchen island with his face buried in his hands.
"So?" Phil asked, approaching his husband as quickly as possible.
"Phil, I hate to say this..." Dan started, shaking slightly. But just as soon as he had said it, he looked up to reveal the giant grin on his face, "We got her!"
Gasping, Phil rushed over to throw his arms around him, "Oh, my God!"
"Phil, Phil... Please, release me. We need to get this furniture assembled, and quickly," Dan stammered, still grinning.
Immediately, they rushed back to the room to finish. The night gone and many smashed thumbs later, the morning came. Both men were equally tired, but nonetheless shaking with excitement as they awaited the hour of their daughter's arrival.
Pacing the flat, Dan bit his thumb and tugged at his shirt collar. Phil was sat on the couch, rearranging the coffee table over and over. Together, they were entirely consumed in their nerves to pay attention to one another.
Ding dong!
The couple's eyes met again and the smiles appeared on their faces.
Dan rushed for the door, Phil hot on his heels. Seconds later, the door was open and Phil's hands were clapped to his mouth. A tiny girl lay in the arms of a social worker before them, staring up at her new fathers with bright green eyes.
"Oh, Felicity..." Dan gasped, taking the toddler in his arms.
"Dan, she's beautiful. I... I can't even describe how I'm feeling," Phil stammered as the door shut moments later.
Dan rolled his eyes, "Phil, you don't think I'm feeling the same?"
"No, I know you are, love," Phil laughed, staring down at his daughter. Felicity's face began to twist and her eyes squeezed shut. Soon, she was wailing wildly, her parents desperately trying to calm her.
"Look what you did, Phil. You scared her," Dan laughed, rocking her gently.
"Dan, she's just scared. She's in a new place," Phil replied, more seriously than Dan's mood. Carefully, he lifted her from Dan and rocked her back and forth, humming a lullaby.
When she stopped crying, Dan dried her tears and took Phil's hand. Together, they walked into her bedroom and laid her down in her crib. Almost immediately, she laid her head down and crashed. Hovering, Dan and Phil stood over her, watching as she slept peacefully.
"Phil?" Dan asked.
"Yeah, Dan?"
Dan hesitated, then said, "Do you think she'll like it here?"
"Of course she will, Dan. We're her parents," Phil replied, taking his husband's hand.
Brown hair flopping, Dan nodded. He allowed moments of silence to pass before saying, "Phil?"
Sighing, Phil looked over at him, "Yes, Dan?"
"I love you."
"I love you, too."
"Want to go FaceTime our parents?" Dan chuckled.
Phil smirked, "Sure do."
Later, after Dan had gone to sleep, Phil laid in bed. All those times Dan hadn't shown him the drawings, and now he'd earned his trust enough to go through them. Thoughts coming to mind, he climbed out of bed and set his feet on the ground. Wandering over to the desk in the corner, he pulled open the drawer.
There sat the original notebook.
Carefully lifting the tattered cover, Phil scanned the pictures. All of them seemed so faded, the pictures of him, yet it seemed like only yesterday that they'd been drawn. Again he flipped the page, revealing a drawing that wasn't like the rest.
It was new.
He picked it up, examining the scene closely. Both he and Dan sat in chairs, the ones in their living room. A small, red haired girl sat in the center of the room, a Christmas tree covered in baubles nearby. She had a present, tearing off the wrapping. As soon as he looked at her face he knew who it was. Felicity, Dan, and himself all sat around the Christmas tree with a fire burning in the fireplace.
It was Dan's dream, and now it had come true.
Satisfied, Phil closed the cover and replaced it in the drawer. He climbed back into bed and propped himself up on his elbow, watching his husband sleep.
"How did I get so lucky?" He asked.
"You just did, Phil," Dan muttered, causing Phil to jump. "Just turn off the light so I can go back to sleep." He smirked ever so slightly, and Phil did exactly what he asked.
He finally showed me, Phil thought. Smiling, he drifted off to sleep, dreaming of his finally complete family.
