He stood at the bar after a busy day. He sighed, he had been waiting at least ten minutes for a drink and all he wanted was the chance to sit down and relax with a pint. As he looked around the crowded bar someone caught his eye immediately. He found he couldn't take his eyes of the woman that sat in the corner of the bar alone. She wore a simple black shift dress and black heels, her legs were bare and her hair fell in perfect curls over her shoulders. He liked the way she sat so quietly , so oblivious to the many eyes that fell upon her. He continued to watch as she sipped her wine and rested her head back against the seat , crossing her slender legs.
He smiled and sat down on the spare seat beside her, he too placed his drink on the table and relaxed back into the surprisingly comfortable seats.
She opened her eyes and allowed herself to glance at the man who sat beside her. He was tall and muscular, with a kind unassuming presence . He finished his drink at the same time as she did and looked across at her,
"I'm going to the bar, do you fancy another?" He asked, his eyes meeting hers as she found herself smiling back at him,
"I don't know who you are," she replied carefully, "you're just a stranger who sat in the seat beside me,"
He shrugged, waiting a moment before he replied, "you're not wrong," he raised an eyebrow, "but what's a the point of us both losing our seats?"
She couldn't help but smile again, "Sauvignon blanc please,"
He nodded, "guard my seat,"
"Deal,"
She found that once they'd struck up conversation, she couldn't ignore the kind stranger who sat so close to her. As the bell rang for last orders, he placed his hand gently on her forearm,
"There's somewhere id like to show you," he offered, "it's by the hospital, the view is incredible..."
She raised an eyebrow and he laughed, a low chuckle that almost made her shiver with anticipation, "I appreciate that you've only known me for a few hours... But I think you'll like it,"
For some reason she trusted this man, and took his outstretched hand. "Do you have any other shoes?" He asked and she shook her head, "no... "
He hesitated for the first time that evening, "I would offer to buy you a new pair if they get ruined, but I think we both know I couldn't afford them,"
She looked at him, her eyes meeting his own, "I'm about to walk up a hill in the dark with a stranger, the shoes are the least of my worries,"
He squeezed her hand as they both smiled, "come this way."
"You were right, this is beautiful," she spoke quietly, as they sat on a bench overlooking the whole of Holby. The lights from the city twinkled in the background and the peace that had surrounded her allowed her to relax for the first time in weeks. He placed his coat around her shoulders and rubbed his hand gently up and down her arm,
"Are you cold?" He asked, "in hindsight I didn't quite think this through,"
She looked up at him and leaned into his chest, "no, I'm not cold," she smiled, "although I hope I haven't ruined your hiding space,"
He shrugged, "there's more than enough room here for us both."
