"So this restaurant that we are going to isn't in either of the towns that I've been to around here?" We were sat in Vic's Jaguar, and he had just driven past the town we'd been to before, headed north up the coast line.
"No, I thought we'd go to somewhere near the apartments you were looking at. It would be good for you to know a few local places, so I was going to show you all my favourite restaurants and places to go around here, though we'll only stop at the one."
"Wow, thanks, I guess. I mean, Juliet was going to show me around a bit anyway, but you'll probably show me some different places." He smiled, looking at me for just a second before looking back at the road ahead.
"I've discussed it with her, actually. We will be showing you to different places completely. She'll focus more on the places where you can buy all the essentials and look for a job, that kind of thing. Meanwhile, I will be showing a few places that can be fun to go to, and when I get back to America at the end of Spring Break, I'll take you to some more of them if you like." Of course he'd spoken to Juliet about it. He always planned everything to the letter, so that everyone knew exactly what was happening and when.
"That sounds like fun. Hopefully I'll get a job quickly, the paintings are selling well, but it won't be enough to live off of, painting people and landscapes." I could sense him frowning, even looking out of the wind screen.
"Kellin, I will keep you comfortable for as long as you need. Settle in first, then you can worry about getting a job and such things." I sighed, knowing that he didn't understand my desire to support myself. However, instead of arguing, I let it go.

When we got to the town, Vic started pointing places out to me, like a huge garden area, some museums, even a small amusement park. We passed a few restaurants, all of which he told me were probably not worth looking at. They looked small and run down, much like the diner I had worked at before.

After a short while of driving through, Vic pointing things out to me on occasion, we turned into a parking lot and got out of the car.
"Just a short walk through the town centre. This is the best place to park for the town centre, especially around the Christmas period."
"I'll keep it in mind when I can drive, and have a car." He grinned, and then took my hand, pulling me off towards a pathway.
"Come on, we need to go to make our reservation."

The restaurant that we were eating in was relatively small, but not as small as the place that they took me to the first time I left the grounds. It was a lot fancier here, with waiters and waitresses in proper shirts rather than plain black t shirts. There was more choice on the menu, I ended up ordering a portion of BBQ chicken wings with chips, while Vic ordered Hunter's chicken.
"So I'm starting decorating with the decorator that you've brought in."
"Yes, you've got all the plans. They should be on their way to meet with Mike right now. I think he came from Michigan actually, moved here recently for work. I can't remember his name, but I'll check it when I get back. Anyway, you'll meet him tomorrow no matter what. I'll get you up in the morning, he'll arrive before I leave."
"Okay, that sounds fine. Yeah, I know all of the plans, you've gone through them with me enough that I can almost recite them in my sleep." This made Vic laugh, smiling widely and shaking slightly.
"I just want it to be perfect."

We continued to discuss the plans for the ball, until our food arrived. When it did, we ate, not really speaking much. Then we were done, and the waitress was taking our plates away again.
"So you are going to try and move out of the house and be settled into which ever apartment you buy by the time that we get back from Vesani"
"Probably, why?"
"It's going to be odd not having you around the house all the time. I still mean it though, when we leave America after collage, the house is yours to do what you want with. Live there, rent it out, sell it. As long as we can come back and visit you from time to time, then it's fine. I'll probably end up letting Mike take the throne, since I'm incapable of loving anyone else, which will mean I can live over here for five or six months of the year anyway."
"I'm sure you could, if you-"
"I can't, Kellin. I tried before, and now that I know you, in person, I suspect that it will be totally impossible." The odd, sad smile he'd been wearing before was replaced with despair. "I'm sorry, it should never have been like this. We should have grown up together, not with you being unaware that I even existed. None of its your fault, its just how it happened, and its wrong."
"We can't change it Vic, nobody can."
"I know. And I must be making you uncomfortable again, so I'll shut up."

We sat in silence, slightly uncomfortable, until the waitress came back with desert menus.
"Would you like anything Kellin?" I looked at the menu, trying to figure out if I did. There was only one desert that I was actually looking for, knowing that if I saw it, I'd get it. And then I did.
"Can I have the sticky toffee pudding please?"
"Make that two of those please." Vic grinned at me while the waitress walked off again. "My favourite desert, I can't not get it."
"Mine too. Always has been, always will be. My Grandma used to make it for me every Sunday, and on my birthdays because I liked it so much."
"The same thing happened for me, only with our chef." We laughed a little, all feelings of awkwardness quickly disappearing. "That makes me sound so spoiled, but my Mum and Dad never cooked for us. Not even once. I can't really cook either. I used to sneak into the kitchen and the Chef would have me help him bake a cake, but when I tried to cook when we moved out here, it went badly."
"Cooking really isn't that difficult. I spent years cooking for myself. I'll cook something for you when you come back to America if you like. Better yet, we can cook together."
"I'd like that. Just be aware that I am totally useless." I laughed again, and soon Vic joined in with me.
"I'm sure it will be fine. Just do as you are told."

After we'd finished our meal and Vic had paid, we walked around a longer route back to the car, Vic pointing places out to me as we passed them. Then we drove straight home, to find Mike and Jaime waiting for us when we got back. They both looked a little worried, the atmosphere much more serious than the laughter I'd been sharing with Vic since we'd left the restaurant.
"Vic, I need you to try some of the canopies that I've got ready, to make sure that they are okay. Chef wants to talk to you about them as soon as possible." Vic looked at me, smiling still.
"Sure. I guess I'll see you in the morning Kellin, since I'll be getting you up quite early. Sleep well."
"Night Vic, night Jaime." I watched them walk off in the direction of the kitchen, while Mike stayed where he was.
"Come on, we need to talk, now."

Mike dragged me up the stairs to my bedroom, closing the door behind us.
"The decorator for the ball came by earlier. Did you know that he just moved here from Michigan?"
"Vic mentioned it earlier, but couldn't remember his name." Mike motioned for me to sit down on the bed, and I did so, and watched as he came across and sat next to me.
"Well I am glad that he didn't, he would have seen your reaction, which he must not see tomorrow. The decorator is Ashton, the guy you slept with back in Michigan. We recognized each other the second he walked through that door, and I had to tell Jaime and Tony about what happened. I just hope that he doesn't blow this whole thing, Vic will freak. I know that you won't blow it, but he doesn't know anything about the situation, and I couldn't tell him. I've also phoned Juliet, so that she is aware of what's going on as well." I sat listening to him, shock reeling over me, that a drunken mistake would go so far.
"Well let's hope that he doesn't do anything that will make Vic realise what's going on."
