Chapter 22: Jobs

Lucy's POV

"Let me get this straight, you left your guild not because they ignored you but due to your misbehaving magic? You've been staying here in Hoshi Town for more than a month, training and being a writer for a newspaper?" Yuuki summarized my story, which i confirmed with a nod.

"Don't take this the wrong way, Lucy. We knew you ran away from home. Do you..umm.. happen to know where Uncle Jude is?" Kurt hesitatingly asked, careful not to hit off a sensitive topic. Sighing, i looked away from them.

"I don't really know. I heard that he started working at a merchant guild after he lost all his riches. I lost all means of communication with him. The last time i saw him was when i visited the Manor to permanently cut all ties with him. Apparently, he hired a guild to bring me back. They end up not just destroying our guild hall, but also hurting my nakama. He went too far.." biting my lower lip to prevent the tears from escaping my eyes, i let out a shaky sigh. Me, my brothers and cousins were settled at my not-so-big living room, drinking cups of tea while catching up.

"Did he... Did he treat y-you well while you were under his custody?" It was Zach's turn to ask. He, of all people, knew how our father can be cold and distant. Father was always like that, even before we got separated. Whenever his business partners would come and visit, we were always forced to stay in our rooms. He barely celebrates special occasion with us such as Christmas, New year and birthdays. He ignores us during a daily basis. Don't get us wrong, he's a good father. Just not the best in showing it.. That's what i always thought. My hopes of him changing went down the drain when he started hitting me. All respect vanished when he hired Phantom Lord. I don't want to, but i've already given up on him..

"N-No.." silence followed my response. They were contemplating on how to react. Guilt. Sympathy. Anger. Revenge. They were confused..

"What did he do?" My twin destroyed the awkward atmosphere. Glancing at him through my peripheral vision, i saw him clench his fists. Guilt and Vengeance.

"He would throw insults and curses at first. I guess he got bored and started to hit me. It wasn't a-a normal occurance, though. I left the mansion at the age of 15, travelled around for a few years before Natsu found me and brought me to Fairy Tail at 17. In a sense, i'm thankful that it all happened. I-If father didn't start hitting me, i wouldn't have left and joined the guild." It was my nature to look at positive outcomes of everything. That's what Mama had taught us. Be optimistic despite the challenges and problems life throws at us.

"That's.. That's good to know. Do you have work today, Lucy?" Kurt smartly diverted the topic to something less emotional and touchy. Recalling the date, i shook my head in response to his question. It was Saturday, one of my free days.

"No.. why? Do you have something planned?"

"Well, i was hoping if you could help us look for a place to stay at?" I raised an eyebrow at him. Why would he bother?

"Aren't you going to stay here with me?"

"Eh? No! We could never invade your personal space like that! This is your apartment. You pay for this. We can-" Yuuki started, i cut her off knowing full well where this is heading.

"Then look for jobs and help me pay off my bills! Let's split the rent, electricity, water and food equally between us. We can also buy another bed or just plain mattress for the guys. I'm sure there's still enough space at the guest room. Meanwhile, Yuuki can sleep with me." They seemed shocked by my proposal, also deep in thought. They're considering it, that's great. I'm not planning on letting them out my house without agreeing.

"Eh? Jobs? What kind of jobs?" Zach scrunched his nose in what i can tell is displeasure. I'm not the least shock by his reaction. My older brother never experienced working. He never lifted a muscle for labor. He's not the only one though. All of them are.

"Yeah. I know the owner of the coffee shop just down the street. I'm sure i can get Yuuki and Kurt-nii jobs there. As a waitress and barista. Max and Zach, on the other hand, can apply at the publishing company i'm currently working at. We're short in staffs right now. What do you guys say?" i offered, they looked at each other as if silently debating on what they should do. A satisfied smile grazed my lips when i saw them sigh.

"Fine. Although, what am i and Zach gonna do in a publishing company?" Leaning back on the couch he's currently sharing with Kurt-nii, my twin gave me a look that means he needs more detailed explanation.

"You can be an editor. Since you're fond of language and literature like me, i'm sure that won't be difficult for you. Meanwhile, Zach-nii is more qualified in the art's department. Since he has talent in drawing and sketching, he can be an editorial cartoonist." calmly, i took a sip of the tea i had prepared for myself. Letting the half-full cup sit back on my coffee table, i pulled out a bunch of old newspaper that was hidden under the same table, along with a few sorcerer's weekly. I handed them to my brothers, for them to see a couple of our finished products that were released a few weeks ago.

"Hmm, your a writer, right? Which of these articles did you wrote, Lucy?" My older brother inquired, his eyes not leaving the paper. I had caught their interest. Yuuki and Kurt-nii also seemed to have been caught, as they too were browsing a few pages on their own.

"Wow, Golden Star seemed to be indemand. She's the only one who has two published articles in each issue." My cheeks flushed hearing Yuuki's comment. Her tone was filled with amazement, gazing almost admirably on the papers.

"No kidding. Her articles are really good, eye catching as well." Hiding my face on my hands, i groaned at Kurt-nii's words.

"Nice Pen name, Golden Star. Though, it sounds really familiar. Don't you guys think?" Zach-nii tapped his chin as if thinking or recalling something from the past. I groaned hearing his remark. Can't they think a hint?

"About 9 years ago.. The Princess and The Dragon, by: Golden Star.." gasping, i looked at my twin with widened eyes. He still remembers?!

"Wait.. that's right! I remember now. That story! Lucy wrote that when we were still kids, right? Under that pen name?" My older brother snapped his finger as if he solved a mystery or riddle. The story he mentioned was something i made up when we were still kids. It was just for fun. I didn't expect it to be remembered though. It was Kurt-nii and Yuuki's turn to look at me in shock. They must have put the pieces together, realizing what my brothers were talking about.

"You're Golden Star?!"

"Yeah.. but don't tell anyone! I used a pen name for a reason! I don't want Fairy Tail to find me nor have clues on where i'am. Only my office mates know. So, please?" Looking at them with my best puppy eyes, i knew i won when they sighed and groaned.

"Fine."

"Great! Let's get you guys settled then let's train!"
