“Demetria!”

                She was close to replying, “Wait, father! One moment please!” But nothing just works for her father—a drunkard, irresponsible father—a father no one would ever dream of having. He would never understand how merciless he had been to her and her sister.

                He called for her name the second time, and she could feel the anger mixing with his voice. In the middle of the night for ten years, their father would come home from town in his usual state—heavily drunk, patience gone from his vocabulary. Of course she had no choice—if she ever had one other than staying with a redneck, she would not wake up every single day with tears welling up in the corners of her eyes. She would not have to live up with torturous living with someone not even related to her.

                The door violently burst open. Such a surprise it didn’t wake her younger sister named Madeleine. Behind the door was an inebriated man with one arm supporting his weight on the doorframe, and the other having a hand holding a bottle of liquor. He kept his head down.

                As if her blood was frozen instantly, she stayed still.

                “I’ve called for your name four times.”

                Her father spoke without any movement. His cold voice was enough to frighten an average kid for years.

                “Four times,” he repeated.

                Before she could do anything, he threw the bottle outside and he bolted inside the house. In an instant, she was thrown by her father violently out of the bed. Just to break her fall, her elbow suffered tremendous pain. Her insides wanted to scream—scream out loud for all the misery she had experienced since their mother died and left them to live with a man that never truly loved her or even her child that was never his.

                But doing that will only make things worse.

                “You—“ from the opposite direction, her father grabbed her by the arm, “—are one useless thing!”

                She was trying her best not to fight or struggle—she just wanted to loosen his tight grip. She could feel her hundredth bruise coming.

                “HOW COULD YOU BE SO USELESS?!”

                “It hurts, please!” she squealed in pain, and she was now trying to free herself. If she would not hold her breath, she would smell the irritating aroma of alcohol.

                “All I expect you to do is to be cooperative!”

                He looked at her in the eye—his were bloodshot and full of hatred and hers was full of fear and exasperation.
