I looked after him for a brief moment, then I turned and walked over to my parents.
"Melissa, my dear, your dance was wonderful!", my mom said and hugged me tightly. "But tell me... who was that mysterious young man?", she asked a little worried.
"I don't know.", I lied.
"Well, now that you seem to be free, would you like to dance with me?", Jonathan asked and smiled at me.
"I'd love to, but first I'd like to have a drink to refresh myself, if you don't mind."
"I will be glad to get you something.", he said smiling and left.
"Melissa!", I heard a voice behind me. I turned around and saw my friend Penelope coming toward me. "Wonderful dancing, truly! But who was that man? Did you know him?", she asked.
"No, I didn't." Her eyes widened, when she saw the shimmer in my eyes.
She took my hand and pulled me away from the crowd. "It was him, wasn't it?", she asked quietly. I looked for a moment, making sure no one could hear us, then I nodded. "Your father will lock you into your room for a year and probably kill him, when he finds out, you know that, right?"
"I do..." Again I looked around, starting to feel paranoid. So many people with masks - and somewhere in the crowd was the man I loved.
"Melissa!", Penelope pulled me back into reality. She turned her head to look out of the window, making me follow her glance. Outside I saw a man in the dark leaning against the rail of the stairs leading into the garden.
"Go. But be careful.", Penelope ordered me. I smiled and rushed outside.
"You're crazy.", I whispered, as I had reached the stairs.
He smiled at me, then reached out his hand. "Will you come with me?"
I hesitated for a moment, but then I took his hand. He led me down the stairs and we walked through the huge garden, holding each other's hand. We were quiet for quite some time, until he broke the silence.
"Who was that man? The one, who was standing next to your parents.", he asked without looking at me.
It took me a moment to collect the right words. "Jonathan. His parents are close friends of my parents.", I replied quietly.
"He seems to like you."
I didn't answer.
"What did you want to tell me earlier?", he asked and stopped walking.
"I can't tell you...", I said quietly.
"Melissa, please, tell me what's going on." Tears started to fill my eyes. "Do you like him?", he asked.
"No."
"Do you like me?" He came closer and I could feel the heat of his body, that touched mine only very lightly - just like earlier when we danced.
"Do you like me?", he asked again.
"I love you, Enjolras...", I said and looked into his blue shimmering eyes. He smiled and came even closer. Then he laid his lips gently on mine.
