My heart started racing. He laid his hands on my hips and I laid mine on his chest. He pulled me even closer and laid his arms around my body, as I laid my arms around his neck. Our kiss got more and more passionate, but after some moments, I pushed him away a little.
"I can't do this...", I whispered with tears in my eyes.
"What? What do you mean?", Enjolras asked confused and took my hand in his.
"I can't be with you..."
"Why? Because of your father?", he asked.
"No, no. It has nothing to do with him..."
"Then why can't we be together?", he asked.
I looked down at the ground, lonely tears rolled down my cheeks. Enjolras laid his finger under my chin and lifted my head, so I had to look into his eyes. "Why?", he asked me again.
"I'm engaged.", I confessed quietly. He let go of me and took a step back. "What?", he asked breathlessly.
"I'm so sorry, I-"
"Who is it?", he interrupted me.
"I beg you, let me explain!"
"Who is it?", he asked me again, more firmly this time.
I took a deep breath. "Jonathan...", I said quietly. He ran his hand through his hair, he seemed to be more than uncomfortable. "I am so sorry, I should have told you earlier! Please, forgive me!", I said and walked toward him. "Please...", I said with tears in my eyes.
He looked at me with sadness written on his face and laid his hand on my cheek. "There's nothing to forgive.", he said.
"What do you mean?", I asked confused. He smiled slightly and kissed me again.
"Run away with me.", he whispered.
This time I was the one to take a step back. "What?"
"Come with me. We'll just run away together and just be happy.", he said smiling.
"I-I can't." Again tears rolled down my cheeks.
"Don't cry, Melissa. Such a beautiful young woman shouldn't cry.", he said and softly wiped the tears off of my cheek. "I beg you, don't do this...", I said crying.
"What? What shouldn't I do?"
"Making me love you, I can't do this...", I said and turned away from him. I wanted to leave, but he stopped me by holding my arm.
"Tell me one good reason, why we can't be together."
I turned back to him and looked into his eyes, then laid my hand on his cheek, kissed him slightly and whispered: "I'm sorry."
I turned and ran back to the palace.
