Stefan led me to my room and closed the door behind us. "Melissa, are you alright?", he asked me, when I sat down on my bed. I just shook my head in response. Stefan sat down next to me and wrapped one arm around me, stroking over my hair. "Melissa, I'm so sorry. I wish I could do something to help you..."

That pulled me back into reality. I slipped out of his embrace and looked at him. "You can.", I whispered firmly.

"How?", he asked confused.

"Go to the barricade and make sure Enjolras survives!" I didn't even realize how ridiculous and offensive my request was, I was too focused on Enjolras and him surviving.

"Melissa, I can't. If your parents will find out, Enjolras and I will be killed. Do you really want that?"

My bubble of hope burst and I realized it. I sighed and shook my head slightly. "No, of course not.", I whispered.

"Listen, tomorrow will be General Lamarque's funereal, so you will see Enjolras again. And maybe, just maybe, he will survive.", Stefan said.

I nodded, already drifting off into my thoughts again. "Could you please leave me alone now?"

Stefan looked at me concerned, wiped a strand of hair out of my face and nodded. "Of course.", he whispered and left.

I let myself fall down on the pillow and cried into it. I still couldn't believe what had happened.
Time flew by, but I didn't care. It turned dark outside, but I was still crying without taking a break. After many hours of crying, I eventually fell asleep.

~ The next day ~

I woke up, when I felt the sun burning on my face. I sat up and looked around. A tray with breakfast had been placed on the small table near my bed. I got up and walked toward it. A note from my mother was laying next to the plate.

Please be ready until one o'clock for General Lamarque's funereal.

I sighed quietly., suddenly she wanted me out there. But this time it was actually good for me - that would be the last time I'd get the chance to see Enjolras, before... well, maybe I could still change his mind.
Tears started to fill my eyes again. It was ridiculous, he was so passionate about his course, I felt stupid for still trying to change his mind. But I would never forgive myself for not trying my best.

I called for my maids, let them draw a bath for me and sent them away after they were done. Which I regretted soon after, because once again I was alone with my thoughts. After the anything but relaxing bath I called them back to help me change into my dress and let one of them braid my hair Usually I would love to talk to Eden and Clara, but not today. And they noticed, thankfully they didn't try to push me and kept quiet.

After they were done I sent them away again with a thank you and left my room myself. Stefan was standing outside with two guards already waiting for me.

"You look beautiful.", he complimented me.

"Thanks.", I simply replied quietly.

"We should go, your parents are already waiting.", he said and reached out his arm. I linked my arm with his and he led me outside.

My parents were waiting in the carriage in front of the palace. I looked at the black coach that started to look like a coffin itself the longer I looked it and sighed. "Everything will be fine.", Stefan said and smiled slightly, trying to encourage me. I tried to smile as well, but I simply couldn't.

I climbed into the carriage and sat next to my mother. Stefan sat on the opposite of me, next to my father. They were both dressed in all black, my father had a serious expression, my mother seemed concerned as she looked at me.

"Melissa, is everything alright?", my father asked.

I shook my head, without saying a word.

"I know, you liked General Lamarque.", he said.

I didn't replay anything, I just kept looking out of the window.

The carriage started moving and slowly dragged us to our destination.

"Where's Jonathan?", I asked after a while, still looking outside the little window.

"We'll meet him there.", my mother explained. I could feel, that she looked at me, but I didn't care.
