"Darling, are you alright? Did he hurt you?!", my mother almost screamed at me, when she came outside to me on my balcony.

"Mother, why did you do that?", I shouted at her with tears in my eyes.

"Melissa, this man, how did he get inside your room? What did he do to you?", she asked and laid her hands on my shoulders, looking up and down to check if I was okay. I pushed her away and took a few steps back. "I let him in. He was just comforting me..."

"You... you let him in? Why, who was he?" She frowned. "He was that man you were dancing with, wasn't he?"

I had to smile slightly. "Yes, he was."

"Melissa, do you even know, what you're doing? I mean, you don't even know-"

"I love him. Mother, I love him more than anyone else in this world. And if the guards hurt him..." I looked at the ground.

What if they had already caught him? What if they had killed him?

"Melissa. You're engaged, you will marry Jonathan."

"I can't do that, mother, I don't love him. I can't marry a man, I don't love.", I protested.

She looked at me in disbelief. "Melissa, if your father finds out-"

"He doesn't have to. If you don't tell him." She sighed. "Mother, please...", I begged and took her hands in mine.

"You should sleep now, it was a long day. Good night, darling.", she simply said, then kissed my cheek and left.

I sighed and turned around, looking out into the dark night. I tried to identify something out there, but it was impossible. I walked back inside, closed the window and changed into my night gown. I laid down in my bed and tried to fall sleep, but I was too upset.

What if Enjolras was dead already? I couldn't live without him, I couldn't even think about that without the urge to cry.

~ The next day ~

I woke up, when I heard a knock on my door. I yawned and sat up. "Come in.", I murmured loud enough for the person on the other side to hear. It opened and Stefan, one of the palace guards, came in. "I have a visitor for you, Melissa."

"Who is it?", I asked confused. Stefan stepped aside and a man with dark, curly hair came in.

"Good morning, Mademoiselle Melissa."

"Courfeyrac?", I asked surprised and got up. I wrapped myself into a dressing gown and rushed over to him.

"Yes. How very kind of you to remember me.", he said politely.

"What are you doing here?", I asked.

"I have something for you.", he told me and pulled a note out of his pocket. "I was asked to give it to you as soon as possible.", he said. I took the note, unfolded and read it.
