We arrived back at the palace and without saying another word I jumped out of the carriage and rushed to my room. I closed the door behind me and slipped down on the ground. I laid my head on my knees and started crying.
I sat there for a long time, it must have been hours, because it had turned dark outside, when I looked up again. I looked up because I heard shots from far away, so I quickly got up and ran outside on my balcony. I saw fires lighten up far away at the café Musain. "Enjolras...", I whispered to myself.
More tears ran down my cheeks, when I heard a knock on my door open. I turned around and Penelope was already entering. She slowly walked toward me and when she saw me crying, she hurried up and hugged me tightly.
"I'm so sorry...", she whispered.
"I wish I could help him. I can't just sit here, not knowing, what's happening to him."
"I'm sure Stefan will come back after the first attack and tell you what happened.", Penelope tried to comfort me.
My eyes widened and I pushed her away a little. "Stefan is there?", I asked her - well almost yelled at her. Penelope looked at me in confusion. "You didn't know?"
"No!", I called out and ran to my door. I couldn't believe it - I asked him and he did it, he left to risk his life and for what? For me. I asked him for the stupidest, most dangerous favor and he really did it. I opened my door and wanted to ran outside - I didn't even know where I wanted to go, just walk or maybe even to the barricade itself - but the two guards in front stopped me. "Let me pass!", I tried to order them.
"I'm sorry, but you can't leave now.", one of them said.
I looked at them angrily. "I am your princess-"
"Orders from the king.", the other guard interrupted me.
I pushed their hands off me and turned to Penelope. "I have to go there. My best friend and the man I love are fighting for their lives at the barricade and I'm just sitting here in this goddamn castle!" I took a deep breath, trying to calm down.
Penelope took a quick look at the guards, then grabbed my hand and pulled me back into my room. We sat down on my bed and I buried my face in my hands.
"Everything will be fine, I promise you.", she tried to reassure me. But I just shook my head. "Maybe you should try to sleep.", she suggested and let go of me.
I nodded and looked at her. "Could you please give me some privacy?", I asked her quietly. Penelope nodded, then she got up and left my room.
I changed into my night gown and wanted to go to bed, when I suddenly heard the shooting stopp, the battle must have been over. I walked back on the balcony. I thought about Enjolras and how much I wanted to be with him. Or rather I wanted him to be with me, safe. I sighed and walked back to my bed, closing the balcony window behind me. I laid down and pulled the blanket over my head and tried to push the bad thoughts out of my head.
Enjolras would die. I knew it. Maybe he was already dead. I started to gain a strong feeling inside of me, but I couldn't tell, if it was a good or a bad one.
Because I couldn't fall asleep I eventually heard my door open quietly. "Melissa? Are you awake?", I heard a familiar sounding voice. I quickly sat up and saw a man's silhouette standing at my door.
