I ran up the stairs and back inside the ballroom. I ran past my parents, making my mother call after me. "Melissa! My- Melissa, what happened? Why are you crying?", she asked worried.
"I have to go...", I simply said and ran up the stairs, through the corridor and into my bedroom. I closed the door behind me, threw my mask on the ground and slipped down against the door. I started crying, I had never cried that much in my whole life so far.I sat there for some minutes, when I heard a noise coming from my window. I looked up and waited. Another noise, like a quiet clicking. I got back up and slowly walked toward it. I slowly opened the window, stepped out on the balcony and looked down, but I clouldn't see anyone. I sighed quietly and walked back inside again. I sat down on my bed, let myself fall on the pillow and cried again.
I loved him. I loved Enjolras more than anyone or anything else! Why couldn't we just be happy together? Why did I have to marry Jonathan? A guy I didn't even know that well.
Suddenly I felt a hand on my shoulder. I jumped off my bed and saw a shadow standing in the dark. I could only see his silhouette, but I recognized his blue eyes, that shimmered in the moonlight.
"What are you doing here?", I asked, swallowing my sobs.
"I can't just let you run away like that. Especially not, when you're crying.", he whispered and wrapped his arms around me. I buried my face in his chest, as he stroked over my hair and kissed my forehead. "I love you, Melissa.", he whispered.
I eventually stepped away from him. "No.", I said. "Don't say that. Please..."
"I won't lie to you. And I won't let you be sad, because you have to marry the wrong man." He looked at me. Something in me shifted, because I smiled slightly, whispered an: "I love you." as reply and kissed him again.
I didn't hear it at first, but my door was opened a few seconds later. I only realized it, because I suddenly heard someone scream. I quickly broke away from Enjolras and turned, just to see my mother standing at the door, looking at us with wide opened eyes. "Guards! Guards!", she suddenly shouted. "No! No, mother please!", I yelled, trying to calm her down. As I saw her expression, I knew it wasn't helping so I turned back again. "Go!", I said to Enjolras.
"No, I will stay with you.", he said calm.
"They will kill you if you do that and I will not let that happen. Get out.", I said and pushed him to the balcony window. "Take care of yourself!", I said. He gave me a brief kiss and whispered: "I love you.", before he climbed off the balcony and ran through the garden.
"I love you, too.", I whispered, looking after him as he got smaller the further he ran.
"Get him! Get this man!", my mom shouted, as the guards stormed into my room. "No, please, don't!", I shouted, trying to stop them from entering my balcony. But obviously that was a lost cause. One of the four guards just gently pushed me aside, then they jumped off the balcony and ran after Enjolras.
