I clutched Jessie's hand tightly and swung around, dragging her with me. I sprinted down the hallway, elbowing a few drunken boys out the way. I pulled Jessie up the stairs and we slipped into the unoccupied bathroom. I locked the door quickly behind us and crouched, leaning against it. I released her hand and slid my legs out.
"What are we going to do?" She panted, plonking herself down on the lid of the toilet. "Is she actually calling the police? What did you do?" Her voice grew more tense, more worried.
"I beat him up." I said simply, causing Jessie to shoot up and look down at me, a worried look painted across her face. "What do you mean, you beat him up?" She squealed, pointing weakly down at me. "Woah, Jess. You don't understand. Don't go pointing at me." I snapped, standing up and towering over her. "This isn't my fault. He was in the alley-"
"Who's he?" She cut me off, standing closer to me and pressing her finger strongly into my stomach. I grabbed her wrist and forced it back. "He is Daisy's boyfriend. He is also a prick." Jessie widened her eyes a little and shook her wrist out of my grasp. "He is dangerous, like Dylan. I really don't understand what goes through boys' minds. Sick, nearly all of them. See, this is why I'm gay." I stepped to the side and looked in the small mascara smeared mirror. I dabbed my cheek with my sleeve and heard a soft giggle from beside me. Then I heard a cough, followed by an inaudible mumble. "I'm supposed to be mad at you." Jessie chuckled, taking a step closer to me. I saw a little face poke over my shoulder, perfectly framed with a glossy black bob. I felt two warm arms wrap around my waist, and something soft press gently against my cheek. "Jessie, stop." I whispered. "I think you're forgetting that we're about to get arrested." -"She hasn't called the police." Jessie moaned, resting her chin on my shoulder. "You don't know Daisy, babe. Especially when she's drunk. She's dangerous, like Joey."
"Girls! Girls!" We heard a voice call urgently, snapping us out of our conversation. Jessie retreated her arms to her sides and slid towards the door, pressing her foot against it so it could only be opened a few inches. I unlocked the door and let it push against Jessie's boot. A slender face popped through the gap, surrounded by messy long hair: Thomas. "Daisy just got off the phone! Everyone's left! The police are coming, girls get out of here!" Every hair on my body stood up and I bit my lip furiously as I heard a sickening creak downstairs. "They're locking all the windows and doors. Go now!"
Jessie forced the door shut again, hearing the trip of Thomas follow after it. We heard loud footsteps, and after they died down, Jessie looked across the room at me. "What now?" She asked, her cheeks flushing red. "We leave." I said simply, pointing over at the small window placed above the toilet. "I'll go first, and I'll catch you. Trust me." I kissed her head protectively and stood myself up on the lid of the toilet. I motioned over for something to smash the glass with. I heard a snap and Jessie handed me a long plastic rod: it had been holding the shower curtain up. Typical Jess.
I leant back, then shot the rod forward, directly into the centre of the, what looked like, weak window. It made a deafening thud, but it only left a brief round mark. I repeated my action, and to my surprise, it left a long, thick crack down the middle of the glass. I smiled widely at my achievement and tried one last time. I succeeded. The glass smashed in one quick motion, and I used the rod to push the excess shards out of the frame. "I've got this." I winked over my shoulder at a nervous Jessie, desperately trying to reassure her. "Jess, we'll be okay."
She looked up at me and blinked away a few tears that were trying to run down her cheeks. I could tell how scared she was. I knew we didn't have time to waste, but I didn't want to mess up here. I stepped down from the toilet and wrapped my arms around her waist tightly, pulling her close to me. She rested her forehead against mine and breathed out deeply. "Jess, I need you to trust me. This is risky, I know, but I need you to have complete faith in me. I'm going to climb down the side of the building." I laughed softly, trying to lighten the mood. "And then I'm going to catch you. We're going to run away together baby." I kissed her gently and pulled away, jumping back up on the toilet seat. I formed the traditional Superman pose with my arms and poked my tongue out at her. "Demi," She whispered, sniffling. "Yeah?" -"I-I trust you." She stammered, and then smiled widely. I smiled back, swung around, and carefully began to make my way through the small window frame.
The music downstairs had drowned out the noise of the rain outside, causing nobody to notice the torrential weather. I dropped my legs over the window ledge and looked down, pushing my dripping hair out of my face. "We're on the first floor!" I called back to Jessie. "I should be able to make it from here!" A few metres below me was a large green bin, much like the one in the alleyway across the road. Almost every place in London was identical. There was also another window below, identical to the one I was sitting on- ironic, right -so I instantly planned out a route in my head.
I was going to slip down onto the window ledge beneath me, and drop down onto the bin. Then I would slither down to the floor, call Jessie, she'd then copy me by sliding down the ledge, and I would catch her from there. It looked like quite a long drop from the ledge to the bin, well, for Jessie anyway, considering her height. Cutie. I thought I was being smart with my plan, until the rain grew dramatically heavier, making it a lot harder for me to see. I managed to slip down to the ledge beneath me, except I landed in an unexpected position.
You know me, Miss Clumsy, over here. I'd planned to land on my feet. You know, emphasis on feet. But, me being me, I ended up slipping down too quick, and I was now gripping the damp window ledge with my hands. I held on for dear life, I even chuckle at it now. I looked up quickly to see Jessie looking down at me, practically hanging out the window. I could tell by the blank expression on her face, that she didn't know whether to laugh uncontrollably at me, or to be really worried. I used my feet to propel myself backwards, and I released the ledge. This time, my plan actually worked, and I landed slap bang in the middle of the bin... on my feet.
I think I deserve a round of applause for that.
"Jessie! I made it!" I called up. I jumped off the bin and looked up, squinting. "Babe! Come on!" I coughed a few times from water intake, and then reached my arms up and spread my legs a little. I saw a silhouette slide slowly down the wall, actually landing correctly on the ledge below. I clapped enthusiastically and waved like an idiot a few times. What I hadn't noticed by this point, was the flashing blue mob of lights. "Jessie!" I squealed again, this time I wasn't joking. I jumped forward as I saw the silhouette drop a little, and next thing I knew, a crying Jessie was in my arms, clutching onto me for dear life. "I thought I was going to die!" Jessie sobbed into my shoulder. I squeezed her tight as she wrapped her legs around my waist. "Well, you didn't, did you? Come on babe, we'll be okay." I began to wobble down the alleyway, turning several corners and turns, desperately trying to escape the deafening squeal of the sirens.
I sat down on the cold floor, Jessie still tightly wrapped around me. I squeezed her waist and pulled her closer. She kissed me gently, and I instantly felt protective again, like my energy had been restored. "You're an idiot for trusting me, you know." I joked, laughing softly. "You got us away though, didn't you?" Jessie chuckled too, and pulled herself closer to me. I wasn't even sure that was possible, but Jessie found a way. She buried her face in my hair and breathed in slowly. "Thank you beautiful," She whispered. "Thank you for saving me." -"Saving you from what? This is my mess." She pulled away a little and looked deep into me. "Thank you for being mine." She said simply. "Thank you for forgiving me. Thank you for being you." She continued, before sweetly kissing me. We were sitting on the floor, in the dark and rain, in a London alleyway. Typical.
