The screams of 5 year olds filled the summer air. Your little sister was just turning 5 and at your house, your parents threw her a huge party. Your best friends had been a big help, Luke had brought the cake that Liz had made, Michael had gotten the piñata, Calum had gotten all the snacks and Ashton had booked an act of some sort and was adamant on keeping it a secret. You handed a little girl, dressed as a princess a plastic cup of juice before walking over to Michael.
"How did you get dragged into this?" You chuckled, Michael looked up at you with sorrowful eyes. A tiara sat in his dyed hair as he sat with a small teacup in his hand. Two little girls sat on either side of him, huge smiles on their faces as they poured the imaginary tea into the cups. One of the girls stuck her hand out, ruffling Mikey's coloured hair with her pudgy hand and giggling loudly whilst nudging the other girl.
"I have no idea." He muttered, lifting the cup to his lips and pretended to slurp. The little girls screamed with laughter, pulling and tugging on his shirt to get his attention.
"Y/N! Calum's playing with the piñata again!" A voice roared, you spun around, trying to hold in your laughter as Ashton stalked over to you. Little girls hanging off of nearly every limb, raising an eyebrow you tried to pluck a girl dangling from his arm, she screamed and hung tighter. Ashton sighed, looking physically tired and a little girl climbed up his back. "Can you help get them off me please?" He pleaded, his hazel eyes wide. You chucked, peering round his bulky back to stare at a little girl who held to his back tightly.
"Sweetheart, would you mind jumping off Ashton? I think we're going to cut the cake now." You asked, the girl stared up at you with wide eyes and smiled, scrambling off Ashton to run towards the parents who were standing on the patio.
"Y/n." You stared down at your little sister who was tugging at the hem of your dress, you raised an eyebrow at her waiting for her to explain why she was next to you rather than running round screaming with the rest of her friends. "Mommy said to get Calum away from the pin.. the pin...." She struggled over her words.
"Pinata, I got it. Go enjoy your party." You said, sending her off to go run with a boy that your mom had often called her boyfriend. Wandering down to the end of your garden, you found Calum beneath a tree with a baseball bat and a strip of fabric wrapped over his eyes. There was a loud thud as Calum made contact with the paper mache but still not enough to break it apart, he grunted loudly and heaved the bat up again. The tulle of the pink tutu lifted up as he held the bat over his head. Two little children stared at Calum, if almost wondering what the poor pinata had ever done to him and honestly you were thinking the same. You bent down to their height.
"The cake is about to be cut, do you want to run over there before someone eats your slice?" You teased, the two looked at each other and bolted at the sound of someone eating their cake slice. Calum swung again, almost hitting you with the bat causing you to yelp out in surprise as you dodged the blow. He lifted up the fabric, taking in a sharp intake of breath when he saw you crouched down on the floor with your hands over your head.
"Whoops sorry Y/n I just got a bit excited," He held his hand out to help you up and you took it gratefully, pulling yourself back up to height. Brushing yourself off you saw loose paper flutter to the floor but no sweets fell along with it.
"Did the pinata beat the almighty Calum Hood?" You joked, pushing your hip into his, he grumbled angrily stuffing his hands into his pocket in defeat. You walked over to the table where your parents and your little sister stood as she waited impatiently to blow the candles out. Your mom lit the big number 5 candle on the cake and everyone begun to sing happy birthday. You looked around at the festivities when you noticed Luke, leaning against the fence, slinking into the darkness where you could hardly see him. You stifled a chuckle. Everyone was eating cake when you ambled over to Luke who stood awkwardly, rocking on his heels as he watched the festivites.
"You okay there Lukey?" You asked, sidling up next to him. His head snapped towards you, obviously not expecting to be talked to. He shifted from foot to foot before fully turning towards you. A little girl who obviously wasn't looking where she was going bumped into Luke's leg, she stumbled backwards and stared up to see what she had hit, Her eyes trailed up Luke's legs and torso until she reached his face to which she burst out crying, turning on her heel and running to her mother who picked her up and attempted to soothe her. Luke stared after her hopelessly and hung his head, shamefully. You bit you lip in an attempt to stop the laugh come out.
"They're all scared of me." He mumbled, playing with a loose thread on his sweatshirt. You raised an eyebrow, questioning him.
"It's because they think I'm a giant." Luke muttered, you reached up linking your arms around his neck and pulling him close.
"It's okay Lukey, I love you anyway!" You leaned up and pecked him on the cheek, before turning to face the party once more, which wouldn't be as amazing as it was without the boys' help.
You were lucky to have best friends as amazing as these in your life.
