audacity
"i-i let my girlfriend die."
as soon as those words leave his mouth, my eyes widen whilst a myriad of questions attack my brain.
"what do you mean you let her die? did you have a choice?"
he shakes his head as he inhales sharply, bringing his shaky hands to tug at the roots of his messy, blond hair.
i swear the patients here get no chance to shower at all.
"s-she died." his voice comes out slow and barely audible. "i c-could have saved her but i-i had the audacity to let her be!"
he's shouting now, grabbing his hair as if he can rip it out while tears brim his eyes.
"she really deserved to live, m-michael... i don't." he sobs as the tears fall at last and his shoulders vigorously shake.
"neither do i, luke." i retort, "is that why you scream every time you sleep?"
he wipes his tears away with the back of his hands, "she haunts m-me, michael. i-i can't sleep without the memory of her death replaying in m-my head like a movie!"
he continues to cry and his violent sobs make me sad, too. "the girl standing behind ashton, the one with that thing that haunts me—is that your girlfriend?"
he looks up at me, eyebrows pulled into a frown. "we can see each other's demons?" he asks.
i nod but then realization hits me—luke's demon appears in the form of his dead girlfriend. then who is this girl in my life?
i shake my head at the thought and focus on luke whose eyes are still filled with tears and sorrow as his hands continue to pull at the roots of his hair.
his body is rocking back and forth with his knees pulled into his chest and i stay silent.
1. luke hemmings. cause of insanity: dead girlfriend.
