Chapter 26

EYES CLOSED, I spread my arm on the other side of the bed, searching for a particular familiar figure. I was not used to this even after days of not seeing him. I missed him already. A piece of me was missing this morning and the space prickled me to look for my other half. I couldn't help myself from not thinking about him. Even before I slept yesternight and the other night, it was him.

I made my bed, making sure that I flipped over the tear-stained pillow. I looked at the mirror and I stared at my own reflection for a moment. I checked if I could still smile before going to kitchen and ate breakfast.

While sitting on a couch, I remembered the project and the meeting yesterday. I couldn't help but be curious about what the meeting was about.

"Hey." I greeted when Lester picked up the call.

"Dominic. What's up?"

"Homebound. Look, sorry I wasn't able to come to the meeting yesterday. I just called to know if there's anything I can help with or if I am still needed."

He chuckled. "Of course you're needed. And yeah, Thea told me."

I was a bit shocked. Thea told him? But she was a secretive person. "Oh, she did."

"Yeah, but don't worry she told me that she didn't tell anyone other than me and you can trust me with that." He promised. "So the meeting was just a quick orientation. There is supposed to be a project board chairman who will also act as a president, there is a vice president, secretary and board of directors."

"Cool. You fit to be their president." No doubt on that. He displayed hard work and courage when the project was still on the making.

"I'd love to. But the thing is I have already prepared myself for something. I already have a plan after college. The assistant from College of Dentistry, Elizabeth, and the assistant from College of Medical Laboratory Science, Donald, have both agreed to take the position of vice president and secretary."

"So who took the position for presidency?"

"You,"

I laughed. It was a real laugh that mom peeked out from her room and gave me a confused look. "No, that's impossible."

"Sorry, but your name is written on the papers that is probably in the office now. I wrote it. And don't worry. Donald and Elizabeth both promised that they will help you manage until you reach fourth year. They will be graduating next year, so it's not much of a trouble. You can do that."

"What?" I imagined myself sitting on the table, squeezing my brain to solve business problems. I was sure that's not happening. "What I know about our project is just its name. For heaven's sake why does it have to be me?"

"Because I know you and none of the others deserves to take that place except you. Come on, Dominic. The race is just starting for you to quit."

"What made you so sure that I deserve it?"

"Professor Mortel told me how amazing and brilliant you are. And Pastor Jedi, you think I don't know him? It's a small world. He told me to help you in any way I can. For Christ, Dominic, do this. He will guide you. We're sure of that."

We both remained silent for a while. Pastor Jedi and Professor Mortel? Seriously, I didn't have any conversation with Professor Mortel after our last one. I even hated him for that. What made them so confident of me?
