Jane sat in her apartment on her couch in utter silence. She didn't know how long she sat there, waiting for Maura to come until there was a knock at her door. She was very worried but she couldn't help it. What if it came down to one of them quitting their job? Neither one of them could, they love it so much. Of course they love each other and have for years, but their jobs consumed their lives. It would be wrong to make them choose, and Jane was certain whatever they choose would break them. If one choose to give up their job it wouldn't be fair and the other would as well, but if they choose to give up the relationship, it would destroy both of them mental and physically. She shot up and went straight to the door. She peaked into the peek hole first, her cop gut instinct kicking in, before opening the door to see a distraught honey blonde."Maur.." Jane said sadly and Maura lost it. She broke out into tears and Jane engulfed her in a hug. She pulled her in and shut the door then led her to the couch. "Shh Maura it's okay. It's okay baby whatever is wrong it's okay."
"I-I'm so..so sorry about earlier."
"Maur, baby it's fine it's okay, I'm not angry at you I could never be angry at you." Jane assured her pulling the girl closer.
"W-we have to break up."
"What?" Jane pulled back and looked at her. "What? Why n-no Maura please no."
"It's not my choice Jane..it's Lieutenant Cavanaugh's. I-I don't want to."
"Then don't. P-please Maur p-please."
"Why do we have to?" Jane asked, feeling tears stinging at her eyes."He said-..it's against the rules for colleagues to d-date." Maura cried out.
"No Maura it's not." Jane shook her head. "There is more to it then this?"
"Is it because..is it because we are girls?"
"It better not be." Jane grit her teeth but froze. "Wait..wait how did he know?"
"I don't know." Maura said quietly then looked up at Jane. "I love you."
"I love you too baby." Jane said pulling Maura into her lap. "God I love you so much."
"I don't want to lose you." Maura said. "Not when I just got you. Jane I just got you, I-I can't lose you."
"Never baby." Jane kissed her forehead. Never.
"Yes." Maura nodded.
"Huh." Jane said quietly.
"Jane?"
"Yes beautiful."
"Will you make love to me." She turned to face the brunett. She didn't want to, but almost added, 'in case tonight's our last night together.'
"Maur, I will gladly make love to you." Jane said and picked the honey blonde up, carrying her into her bedroom.
--
"Come in." A deep voice said and Jane and Maura came in. "Ah, close the door, have a seat." He said and they did so.
"Sir, why did you tell Maura that we couldn't be together when we work together?"
"You know the rules better than any other detective Jane Rizzoli, even if you don't always follow them." He mumbled the last part, but she herd.
"Forget the rules!" Jane shouted, Maura had begged her on the way over here to watch her language, Jane promised to try.
"Rizzoli-"
"No disrespect Lieutenant, but Maura is the love of my life. I know it's not against the rules, is it because we are girls?" Jane asked getting more mad. She felt Maura's hand on her thigh, it was a calming gesture.
"Damn it Rizzoli, you know that's not it."
"Then why? Why does it matter?"
The Lieutenant sighed. "You can't be on each other all the time out in the open and work together."
"We aren't?" Maura asked confused.
"Bullshit." The man scoffed. "I saw you one day at Jane desk. Jane was practically filling you up and that's against the rules. Be in your office, don't get caught, that's all that matters." He shrugged.
"Wait so.. So we don't have to break up?"
"What?" The man asked sitting up."I never said you had to break up." He said and Jane faced Maura.
"You said that Jane and I couldn't always be together."
"I meant you couldn't always be with each other here, you both have jobs that you're very good at." The older man said. "But I would never try to break you up. I get now why you left my office crying. I'm sorry Dr.Isles, that wasn't my intentions."
Maura felt embarrassed. She had caused a big scene just because she misunderstood her boss. "Oh."
"Thank you." Jane thanked her Lieutenant. "We promise to still do our jobs and be more careful." They all three stood up.
"You're welcome, you're dismissed."
Jane walked out of the office with a sigh. "That went well."
"I'm sorry Jane." Maura said quietly.
"Don't be sorry, it was a misunderstanding."
Maura nodded, but she still felt guilty.
--
"Maura?"
"Yes honey?"
"I-I'm ready to tell Ma about us, I-if you are."
Maura couldn't help the smile that broke out unto her face.
"I'm ready."
"It's going to be hard." Jane whispered but grabbed Maura's hand. "But I know I'll have you to get through it."
"Always." Maura assured, kissing the top of the brunettes hair.
"She's in the guest house correct?" Jane asked sitting up.
"Yes but no offense Jane you smell like sex." Maura indicated at their naked sweaty bodies.
"I know, but I was wondering if tonight you wouldn't mind hosting dinner. We can invite Frost, Korsak, Frankie and Ma, and whoever you choose to invite, but I want Frankie with me when I tell her if that's okay with you."
"That sounds perfect, go call them and I'll go get a shower."
"It's just now noon."
"I know, and gosh do I love off days, but you gotta give them an advance so we know who is and isn't coming, and I really want a shower."
"Okay." Jane said kissing her.
"I'm proud of you Jane."
"Thank you." Jane smiled at her. "I love you Maura, and I want everyone to know you're mine, I don't want to be a secret anymore. But wait if you aren't ready for people to know we don't have to. Maura please don't feel like you have to just because I said that."
"I don't Jane." Maura chuckled. "I want people to know, but I don't feel like I have to tell people, I want to tell people."
"Okay." Jane smiled and kissed her.
"Okay, I'm going to take a shower." Maura said smiling and then going into the bathroom. She then opened the door and peaked out a Jane. "Jane?"
"Hm?"
"Do you uh..maybe want to join me for a shower."
Jane smirked. "Hell yes."
