It was the worst feeling possible for Zac to witness people mentioning Taylor's relationship with this new guy who had interfered with what the two former bandmates could have been.
They didn't talk about things. In fact, they didn't talk at all for weeks. The last time they had gone so long without contacting one another was following the group's tragic split.
One perfect morning, Zac woke to birds singing outside. It was early June, just days away from Zac's birthday. But at that point, his birthday wasn't something he cared much for. Nonetheless, it was an absolutely beautiful morning. The sunlight had managed to sneak into his room, causing him to squint. Being a natural instinct of his, he immediately reached for his phone the second he woke.
He pulled it closer to himself, turning it on to see two missed calls.
Missed Call
Taylor
Zac's eyes widened over seeing who had called him. He didn't waste a second in returning the call.
"Taylor," he spoke quickly once Taylor had answered the call.
"Hey," he responded, his voice soft and quiet. His one word was followed by a sniffle and a sigh. It was obvious that Taylor was either sick, or what was more likely: something was wrong. Just as Zac opened his mouth in preparation to speak, Taylor did so.
"We broke up." Another sniffle.
"I'm so sorry, T," Zac said with the hopes of comforting him, although part of him was happy. He felt a bit, no, very ashamed of experiencing such a feeling. He shouldn't have, considering Taylor was his friend. Taylor was his best friend.
"Don't be. I mean, it sucks. It does suck. But I realized that sex was one of the main things for him. Which was okay, I don't think I should have put any labels on my relationship with him. And I didn't have as much time to talk to you while I was with him. So it's okay."
Maybe some of that wasn't entirely true. Taylor did break things off with Nick due to the other man wanting only sex. That was his reasoning when he ended things, at least. He did like him...a little bit. Those things were true. Nick was a sweetheart, but Taylor too was more interested in the sex than anything serious.
But if it was under other circumstances, where Taylor wouldn't be essentially using Nick to get back at Zac, who had turned him down not once, but twice, then he most likely would not have forced the label of 'boyfriend' into the relationship so soon. Or at all. Even though when he ended things, he claimed it was because of Nick's interest in only that one activity, there was much more behind it. When he realized that Zac wasn't coming around, begging, or being crazy jealous, Taylor decided it was time for plan B. Plan B - actually talk to Zac. Crazy, I know.
"Hey, uh," he spoke after a silence that took up a few seconds. "My birthday's in a few days. We weren't really speaking, so I was too nervous to reach out to you and talk to you. But it's soon, and my mom is throwing a party with my family and friends all coming over. Well, she left the inviting people all to me, but, okay, I'm rambling. Saturday night. Can you come? I hope you can."
"Of course, Zacky," he teased, "I'd love to come. I'm glad I called you, then. I would feel terrible if I were to miss my best friend's birthday party," he grinned.
"Okay, well, I'll send you all the details. I missed you, by the way. Saturday night," he repeated, just before ending the call.
But little did the guitarist know, Zac had something planned that he hoped would make Taylor happy. No, not sexy stuff.
Better.
