Chapter 25
I Have Weird Friends
Evie's POV.
That night Halley walked home. Kaleigh drove home and dropped off Melissa on the way.
They left after my brother helped me out of the pool after Mac pushed me in. And spring evenings are usually fairly warm in California but it was cold and I was soaking, same with Mac. My brother, Colton, grabbed Mac and I towels cause we knew mom would get angry and dad would nod along with her about a wet floor or whatever. It was late and my parents decided to go out to eat after a long day of work. Although it was Saturday, my parents work as much as they can and find things to work on (which is a lot).
Waiting for the towel was actually quite quiet and freezing. It felt like an eternity. I could feel Mac's stare on me. And it was growing to be awkward which it never seemed to be that way around him, except for now.
"Evie?" Mac began and I looked over at him, "Do you want to start our project Monday morning? The eating part."
"I don't know if that would work," I begun, "I have drama in the mornings on Mondays and Fridays."
"Then we will do it before drama," Mac stated.
"We all know you don't wake up that early," I state. School starts at 8:30. He gets up at like 8:15.
"Wake me up then. Mom will kill me if I don't work on this project."
So true. His mom is kind of hard on him with school work.
My brother came back with the two towels before I could respond so I decide to just shut up and dry off. I am freezing. Must get warm, must get warm...
After Mac and I were all dried off we followed Colton to the house.
It was a little after nine and Mom and Dad probably will be back in like two hours. That's how it usually is on a Saturday; they go to work early in the morning, go out on a date, and come home eleven at the earliest.
I have never been that person that was super close to her parents. I was pretty independent when it came to family stuff.
We all sat down on the kitchen bar stools at the island. I may have threw my crutches on the floor causing it to make a long clank. Well they were in the way.
Mac told us about why he came to our house and to be honest I really didn't expect that, no that it was bad. I really didn't expect that to be the reason he came over here.
Their parents were having a party, inviting everyone on the street for tomorrow and he wanted to know if we could make it along with our parents.
We said "yes." I guess we both silently figured that if his parents aren't working our parents must not be working either.
Gosh, all this thinking is going to give me a headache.
"Evie?"
"EVIEEEE!!!!"
"What?!? Yeah! Huh... What?" I asked. What did I miss? I have to stop this zoning out thing, I feel like Halley. It's crazy how much Halley zones out. Like you could change her whole outfit while she's zoning out and she wouldn't even notice. I mean, the biggest question is how she gets A's on her report card if she doesn't pay attention and practically fails every science test. She says, "It's magic". More like luck. That's only cause Mrs. Langley, the science teacher, likes her and actually quite frankly favorites her. Mrs. Langley is weird like that. ZONING OUT AGAIN!!! I feel like this will never stop. Ughhhhhhhh.
"EVIE," Colton says loudly making me burst away from my annoying thoughts.
I look up at him and he continues, "He left Evie."
"What?" I ask.
"Like five minutes ago Mac left and you were just sitting there not moving an inch or even saying goodbye," Colton states chuckling and nodding his head side to side.
Whoops. I shrug my shoulders and plop down from the high barstool.
Colton picks up my crutches and hands them to me then walks away into the living room.
I go into the freezer (not literally) and grab a tub of Ben and Jerry's chunky monkey ice cream. I hobble up the stairs in my crutches. Don't worry I'm a pro with crutches. I should be in the olympics for making it up the stairs in crutches.
I walk into my room and decide to check my phone.
I click on to Instagram App because I sort haven't been on it in like a month and decide to see what was recently posted.
That's nice, Halley posted a video of her rolling down the stairs in a ball into her basement two minutes ago.
I decide to reload the page. It reloads to a picture of Mac and Savannah making a weird face like they smell something bad at a restaurant and Mac's holding up his fork with a piece of steak on it. I haven't spoken to Savannah in a while. The last time I did there was this weird tension. And I didn't like it. I read what Mac wrote, 'Best pic on IG.' Well he's full of himself. I scroll down a bit and get to a pic of Melissa brushing her short blonde hair. Kaleigh posted a pic of a cat taco shirt. I decide to click like on all of them. Honestly, my friends are all weird.
My phone began to buzz. I checked who texted me and it was Mac.
Mac:
'So you liked my photo? Does someone like what they see?'
Me:
'You know I'm lesbian?' I tease.
Mac:
'I was talking about the food'
Me:
'I have chunky monkey' That's Mac's favorite ice cream flavor.
Mac:
'I'll be over in 20 then'
