"Jack and I are going to go scope out the town, the rest of you just stay here and make camp," I say standing up and dusting the dirt off of me. "So, Rose, earlier I was going to tell you something ...," Jack starts but pauses. I recall him saying something before Mrs. Brandywood called me over to talk. "Yes, and?" I ask.
"Well, um, you see, I, um Ilikeyou," he mumbles. "What?" I ask not understanding what he said. "Well, um, the weather here sure is nice, huh?" Jack says. "Okay, I know that's not what you said," I reply playfully glaring at him. "Nope, I'm pretty sure I commented on the weather." "Fine be that way," I say as we enter the town.
We can see almost the entire town from where we are. "What's the easiest way to find information about a town in the middle of nowhere?" Jack asks. "Well in the movies people get their information from bars and/or pubs." I respond gesturing to a small bar. "We're going in there aren't we," Jack winces. "You act like you never had alcohol," I say surprised.
"I have but that was back in the sanctuary, and it was an elven wine, not beer." He says disgusted. I shrug. "Well it's not like we have any money to get anything, now put on your big boy pants and let's go." I walk towards the bar. I hear Jack groan and follow.
Opening the door the smell of beer immediately washes over us. Entering we both make are way over to the barstools. I pull out two and we both take a seat. "Just listen around," I whisper. "Right." I notice I'm one of the few females in the entire place. " 'Ey sweet'art," I hear someone say. I turn my head and see a man sitting there. He's covered in dirt and his teeth are yellow and crooked. "Yes?" I ask casually.
"What's someone as pretty as you doing in a place like this anyway," I can smell the alcohol in his breath. He's either already drunk or well on his way to being drunk. "Just passing through," I respond turning back around. I feel his grimy hand grab onto my arm. "Come on sweet'art," moving closer.
I quickly turn around and punch him. When he loosens his grip I hit a pressure point on his wrist and he falls unconscious. I finally turn back around all the way and Jack is hurling daggers with his eyes at the man. "Thank you," I look up and see the bartender. "He does that to every women he crosses," she says looking thankful.
"No problem, do you have any kind of news around here?" I ask. She points to a television in the corner. After changing the channel to the news, the women yells, "EY, YOU LOT SHUT YER TRAPS, I'M TRYING TO HEART THE NEWS!" The men immediately get quite and a breaking news flashes on. The news anchor looks slightly scared as she makes her announcement.
"Earlier today the entire mountain range that is in between Canada and the United States collapsed however recent searches show that it was purposely blown up. And using security cameras that kept around for climbers of the mountains picked up a group of fourteen teenagers fleeing the scene." A picture pulls up and shows us. "If anyone in either country sees these kids they are to report them at once."
Jack and I glance at each other. 'Time to go?' he mouths at me and I nod. I calmly reach down and form to hoodies out of the shadows handing one to Jack, we both put them on and pull the hood up over our heads. "Hey those kids look a lot like you two," the women comments, but we're already gone.
