"You mean we have to walk? All the way there?!" Brianna exclaims. I nod sighing, "Yes now let's do role call-Jack?"
"Here!" Jack sighs.
"Jake?"
"Present," Jake says.
"Twins?"
"Here!" Kaveri, Paige, Jason, and Jacob exclaim.
"Leo?"
"Present and awesome," Leo shouts proudly, running up to the group.
I cough and say, "Arrogant," before calling out, "Sasha?"
"Here!"
"Luke," I growl slightly.
"Here," he says trying not to stutter.
"Brianna?"
"Here and back off of Luke," she sighs.
"Lizzy?"
"I'm here," she says.
"Jasmin?"
"Here!"
"And I'm obviously here," I sigh.
"Let's go we need to be far away by sun up," I say. "Sweet! Where are the sports cars?" Leo asks, not knowing what I had said to Brianna because he was late. "In the dimension where I wear sparkly pink things every day and give hugs to everyone I pass!" I say smiling innocently. "Yeah we're walking," I say dropping my happy expression.
"ROAD TRIP!!" Jason and Jacob exclaim. "Can we leave them here," Lizzy whispers to me. "Sadly no, but don't worry I brought many pairs of earbuds," I reply. "Good," I start walking into the forest in the right direction. The only proof I have of the others following me is the footsteps behind me in the snow.
"So," I turn my head and see Jack standing beside me, "about back there in the skating rink, I could've sworn that you and I had a moment ..." "I don't know what you're talking about," I say monotone voice. "But-," "Buts are for sitting, we are not sitting we are walking."
Jack goes around to the back of the group. I slip on some headphones and turn on I turn on the orchestra radio and just let the music play. My mind drifts off to what I said to Mrs. Lindley when I left.
...
"Rose!" She cries out when I open the door, "You're okay!" She runs up to hug me but hesitates. I throw my arms around her knowing that this will most likely be the last time I see her. "Rose what- what's going on?" She asks. "Mrs. Lindley, I want you to know that you are the closest thing I've ever had to a mother here and I'm sorry that I have to leave but it is for the best."
"Leave? Why would you need to leave?" She asks releasing me from the hug. "I-I'm not from this world," I say hesitantly, "And I wouldn't tell you this unless I trusted you a lot so congratulations. Nathaniel and Martha are from the same place that I am so there hatred for me is deeper then you can imagine. Which is one of the reasons for this," I gesture to my still healing body.
"And do to recent developments I, along with twelve of the kids in Burgess, are going back to the sanctuary. Please don't be mad," I finish weakly. "How could I be mad at you?" She asks brushing a piece of stray hair out of my face. "Ever since I was young I wanted a daughter. You are that daughter to me."
...
I feel a lone tear fall down my face. "Good bye mom," I whisper, looking up into the starry night.
