Your whole family usually gets together in the Summer for about a week. Being in college, you don't really get out much. Breaks from school are a blessing, but you weren't too excited about driving thirteen hours to the middle of the United States. Your boyfriend, Sean, lives in Ireland. You don't get to see him much, as he's always busy with his YouTube career. Sometimes you can afford to fly out to Ireland, but you're in college and basically broke 24/6. The only day of the week you aren't broke is the day you get paid from your part-time job. Sean can more easily afford to visit you. He tries to make time for you, but it's difficult and tiring to prepare for trips a lot.
He promised he would visit you this June. And you were holding him to his word. You invited him, with your family's approval, to the family gathering. Sean prepared enough videos for two weeks even though you were only going to be with your family for one week.
You drove to the airport to pick up Sean. You waited for him where the plane would disembark. Many people came out before him; you started to think maybe you were in the wrong place. That is, until you spotted his messy green hair. You grinned from ear-to-ear as he continued walking, simultaneously looking around for you. You ran up to him and gave him a big hug, Sean giving you a kiss on the top of your head.
You led him to your car, tossing his bags in the back. You both got in a buckled up, beginning your trip. "Sorry to make you sit in car for six hours right after your flight," you said, turning your attention to him for a moment. He shook his head. "No, no, it's fine. At least I'm with you." He smiled sheepishly. "I purposely didn't sleep at all before the flight, so I got roughly eight hours of sleep on the plane with an hour left." You always felt bad for each other when either of you visited, because the trip going either way was almost ten hours long. "Smart," you added. "I might try that next time I come see you."
It was about seven in the afternoon when you left, and you stopped for "dinner," so you arrived at your resting place at about one o'clock in the morning. Sean couldn't drive because he didn't even have a liscence in Ireland, so you drove the whole way. Sean tried to keep a conversation going since eleven o'clock, to try to keep you awake.
You stepped inside your grandparents' house, keeping quiet because they were surely asleep. Sean followed you up the stairs to your room and you fell asleep instantly. Sean accidently woke you in the morning by fidgeting. You opened your eyes and checked the time. It was almost ten o'clock. You dragged Sean out of bed so you both could talk to your grandfather and his wife before you left. "Look at that green hair!" your grandfather announced. You talked for a bit more than an hour, but then you had to get going.
You somehow survived another seven hours on the road. You arrived at your grandmother's house around six o'clock. And of course, family members had comments about Sean's dyed hair. You set down your bags in a guest bedroom, Sean tiredly sitting on the bed. "Doing nothing for hours on end except for driving makes me feel lethargic," you groaned. Sean motioned for you to sit on his lap and opened his arms. You sat sideways on his legs, his arms wrapping around you as you inhaled the faint scent of his cologne. You sighed and leaned into his chest.
The first few days you were there, you didn't really get out an do anything. Everyone just sat around and visited with each other, played games, and watched movies. There was a ping pong table, so of course you and Sean played that a lot. You urged Sean not to curse around your family. Only a few guys in the family cursed, but not as much as Sean did. While playing monopoly, a "shit" escaped his mouth, and you elbowed him in his ribs.
Sometime during the week, the whole family went to the river, renting canoes, kayaks, and inflated rafts. Your family thought it would be cute if you shared a canoe or a raft, but you both wanted kayaks. You tried to stay near each other on the river, the whole group dispersing once on the water. You took some pictures of the scenery. Everyone had their swim suits on, but even though it was blazing hot out, the water was freezing cold. The "tour" of the river was expected to be six hours long, so four hours in, everyone got out onto the sand mixed with rocks to eat the food they packed.
You heard a large splash behind you and spun around, seeing large ripples in the water. Your teenage cousin's head popped out of the water. You noticed the bluff beside him. "Did you jump?!" his mother said, half angry and half proud. "Yeah! The water is freezing though!" he replied. His mother frowned until your uncle reassured her that it was safe.
You and Sean looked at each other at the same time, smiling and going behind some trees to take a narrow path to the bluff. You stood at the edge. "I'll jump if you jump." You grinned excitedly at Sean, adrenaline pumping through your veins. He chuckled and grabbed your hand. "We'll jump together," he offered. You nodded and got butterflies in your stomach, from Sean and from looking down at the water. "Don't think about it too much," Sean smiled. He started counting down from five. On one, you both leaped into the water, yelling on the way down. It was freezing cold. He didn't let go of your hand as you both swam to the surface. You opened your eyes when you came up, seeing Sean flip his hair out of his eyes. You both swam to the nearest shallow spot in the water. You stood up, somehow feeling colder out of the water. You looked at the sky and noticed that clouds were hiding the sun. You wrapped your arms around yourself, feeling just how cold your skin was from being in the water only for a minute. Sean treaded through the knee-high water to wrap his arms around you. His bare chest offered your body some warmth. You hugged him, both of you trying to warm up.
Still embracing your smaller frame, he spoke. "Wanna jump again?" You looked up at him as if he were crazy. "Hell yes," you replied.
