Jack's fingers softly grazed over your face. His hands rested on your cheeks. "I'm nervous," he whispered. "I know," you responded. "But it'll be okay."
His hands slid down your arms and one grabbed your hand, pressing it to his chest. It was beating rapidly. "I'm nervous, but I'm excited. I don't want to get my hopes up, you know?"
You rubbed your thumb over the back of his hand. "Yeah," you sighed. "You still have a few weeks left until the operation. But I'm nervous too."
"Why?"
You hesitated. "If all goes well, you'll be able to see. And that's wonderful. The world really is nice looking, but I'm afraid you won't think I'm. . . nice looking."
You watched a small smile stretch on his lips and his hands wrapped around your torso and pulled you into a sweet embrace. "You describe the world to me, you tell me how beautiful it is. I could listen to you go on for days about how wonderful the sky is and how it changes, and about nature. I just hope I can make you talk about yourself in the same way you describe the world," he said. A few tears rolled down your cheeks. Before, you'd only given him details he asked for occasionally. Like, "what color is your hair?" "What color are your eyes?" "What does that color feel like?"
That night you described Jack to himself, telling him about all of his cute little quirks. Then you tried to describe yourself in more detail.
(A/N) God I've written "describe" so much it doesn't sound like a real word anymore.
-operation day-
You led Jack through the doors and signed in, then sitting in a waiting area. He nervously bounced his leg until you put your hand on his knee. His breathing became more steady. He couldn't see it, but you were smiling widely. Eventually the doctor came in and welcomed you both, putting a hand on Jack's shoulder and nodding to you.
"Hello you two. It's go time Mr. McLoughlin," he said with confidence. Jack linked his arm with yours as you followed the doctor down some hallways. You led Jack to the bed and he sat down on it. He slowly leaned back to lay down. You kissed his forehead and whispered, "I love you," before you and to exit the room and return to the lobby. It was only a fifteen minute procedure and it wasn't even a risky surgery, but you were still nervous for Jack.
The operation had gone well, the doctor told you. Anesthesia should wear off soon and when he wakes up, we take the bandages off his eyes.s
You sat in a chair by Jack's bed for an hour or so, just watching his steady breathing. He had white patches over his eyes and a breathing tube down his throat. You noticed that he'd started to wake up, given the fact that he started gagging. You pressed a button and someone rushed in to take the tube out of his throat, Jack coughing horrendously. The nurse went off to find the doctor. You grabbed Jack's hand. "How do you feel?" you asked. He just breathed for a moment. "My eyes feel a bit itchy, but I'm not allowed to rub them. Other than that, fantastic."
You smiled widely. The doctor walked into the room. "Ready?" he asked. "It's pretty bright outside so the natural lighting is good in here, so I'll turn off the lights in here. You're gonna be a bit sensitive to light."
"It's to be expected," Jack responded with a smile. He kept his eyes gently closed as the doctor uncovered his eyes. "(Y/N)?"
"Yeah?"
"Sit in front of me please."
You did as he requested. You cautiously crawled onto the bed as he pulled his legs to sit Indian style, and you did the same opposite of him. A soft smile graced his lips as his eyes fluttered open. He blinked a lot, then started at you in awe. Tears formed in his eyes as his smile somehow grew wider. He grazed his fingers along your cheek. "God, you're so beautiful," he coughed out, laughing a little through his tears.
"Wait until you see yourself," you said, your fingers brushing his hair back.
