ShadowCryWolf You asked for mermaids and pirates but this is basically a little mermaid AU haha

When he was little, Seán would pretend to be a pirate. He'd play with his brother and sister, and of course they made their sister be an evil sea creature. She didn't mind, she loved splashing around in the water. The boys would race into the water and pretend to slay the evil beast that was their sister. They did this countless times.

"Can't I be a mermaid or something this time?"

"No!" Seán squealed. "Pirates fall in love with mermaids and that'd be gross!"

"Okay, okay. Then can I be a pirate too?" she asked with puppy dog eyes.

Seán's older brother groaned. "Okay fine, but hurry up putting on your costume!"

She nodded and eagerly ran back home to collect some pirate gear. While the boys waited, they thought about what they should do. Seán spotted a cluster of rocks. He pointed towards them with his wodden sword.

"Let's go look for hidden treasure!" he exclaimed.

They ran over to the rocks and started climbing them and searching around. They dug small holes in the dirt between the rocks and on the sides, and searched the puddles around them. Their sister returned and helped them search. That was when Seán saw something move with the flow of the ocean. He hopped between rocks and climbed over others. He yelped when he slipped and fell into the sand. He rubbed his butt as he looked around. He then spotted a little girl in the water, her face half underwater. His eyes widened and he waved. She quickly ducked her head back underwater and Seán could see the water ripple as she swam away. Confused, he just went back to searching for treasure. He was six years old, you couldn't really expect him to worry about that too much. But he told his brother, who joked that it was a mermaid. Seán and his sister played along for the sake of the game. But every time he returned to the shore, he couldn't help but think about the girl his brother said was a mermaid.

Even as he grew older, the thought never left his mind. He was twelve, and it was frowned upon to still believe in that stuff. One particularly nice afternoon, Seán took off his socks and shoes and rolled his pants up as far as they would go. He waded in the water, feeling the wet sand glide around his feet and between his toes as he walked around. From the corner of his eye he saw something move, other than the waves. As he curiously trudged in that direction, his foot slid on something slippery, making him fall back into the water. He thrusted his arms downward until his head popped up from the water. He was already soaking. Might as well go for a swim. He took off his restricting shirt and threw it onto the sand.

He ventured out a bit, periodically looking back at the shore to make sure he hadn't drifted too far. The water was a little murky. He could see his feet, a shade of green through the water, and everything past that was hidden. He started to worry about what else could be in the water with him; he didn't know how deep the water was wear he was swimming. So when something touched his foot, he squealed. Rest assured, he looked down to see that it was only seaweed. Seán decided he had enough of the ocean and turned back, but when he kicked his foot, it got stuck in something. It was probably the freaking seaweed again. He kicked his foot again and again, which was not helping him keep his head above water. Waves splashed into his face every so often, and he'd cough out the bitter water.

He'd somehow gotten more stuck in the seaweed. He frantically tried to swim up, but even then his face was barely breaching the surface. A wave smacked him the face, pushing him further down until he scrambled up again. He gasped for air the second he could and screamed for help. He called for his mum, his dad, his siblings, anyone within earshot. Something else touched his foot and he screamed again, thrashing violently. When his foot was grabbed, he realized it was a human (or at least human-like) hand. He stopped kicking, resorting to flapping his arms in attempt to stay afloat, to look down. He could only see a hand and long hair that looked like it had never been cut. Soon, his foot was free and he was able to swim normally. A face popped up beside him. He was startled but didn't scream. It was the curious face of a girl around his age.

You looked him up and down with curiosity, and he did the same. There was something wrapped around your chest that wasn't a swimsuit top. He didn't know exactly what it was but it looked like some kind of sea plant that had been twisted and woven. Something brushed his foot again, but it wasn't seaweed. He looked down yet again, and saw a coral colored tail. His eyes widened and he looked up to see you looking at his feet. When you made eye-contact with him, you smiled widely and he gave you a shy one in return.

"Thanks for um, for saving me."

You opened your mouth to say something but someone interrupted.

"Seán?! Come back right now!" Seán heard his mum yell as you ducked back underwater, grabbing his hand.

"Coming!" he replied. The woman huffed and turned around to return home. Seán tugged his hand up and you exposed your eyes to see if she was gone. "That was just my ma. I have to go but. . . I'll come back tommorow."

You hesitantly released his hand and he swam back to shore. You wished you could go with him. But you couldn't, and you'd just have to wait for him to return.

Sure enough, he returned the next day. It was a bit before noon when he ran into the water, this time adorned in swimwear. He swam out a bit and looked around. He yelped when you grabbed his arm, hugging it tight with an excited smile on your face. Your expression made him immediately forgive you for scaring him. You both swam over to the rocks and hung out there, talking for hours until Seán had to go. This was routine for years -- Seán would go out to swim whenever he could, just to see you.

It was one day you were talking, when you were both sixteen, that he realized you were the most beautiful creature he'd ever seen. He decided he had to ask: "Hey, are pirates real?"

You looked at him with a confused expression. "Pirates?"

"Yeah, like guys on big ships, I guess?"

"Oh," you thought for a moment. "Yeah, I've heard of a few."

"Well, do pirates ever fall in love with mermaids?"

The question caught you off guard. You had to ponder on the thought. "Yeah, I think so. I've heard talk of men who gawked at mermaids, and some mermen, they spotted."

Seán responded quietly. "I guess I'm a pirate, then."

"You have a boat?"

"No! No that's not what I meant. I-"

"Oh. . ."

"Yeah."

You both sat on the shore awkwardly for a moment before he stood up.

"Wait!" You grabbed his wrist. He stared and waited for you to say something. "Meet me here, when the sun is directly overhead."

He slowly nodded, and walked back home. You dived back into the water, eagerly swimming towards a solution.

You were soon face-to-face with an ugly woman-octopus hybrid. You told her you wanted to be human. You didn't love your life in the water anyway; your family was horrible. That was why you stayed near the shore. So, in exchange for your voice, your tail was turned into a pair of legs. You almost didn't make it to the surface; humans didn't seem to be able to breath underwater. It was almost noon. You swam towards the cluster of rocks, a lot slower without a tail. You were exhausted when you finally reached the rocks, and you held onto one as you hid behind it. After a while of waiting and wiggling your new toes, you saw Seán walking towards you. He squinted and awkwardly smiled when he noticed you. He waded in the water a bit below chest level. You swam up to him and stood up, wobbling slightly. With your legs, you were about a head shorter than him. You gently kicked his leg. I he realized it didn't feel scaly and looked down. He was surprised to see legs and um, that you weren't wearing anything besides those plants around your chest. His face turned the shade of a red herring, and he turned to trudge back to the sand. You followed to the extent of waist-level, slowly learning to walk with the help of water. He went back in to knee level water and held out his beach towel to block the view of your. . . private area. He looked away as he asked you to take off the plants, so you did, and he wrapped the towel around you. He noticed you stumbling and wrapped an arm around you to keep you steady. Slowly, you two walked up to his house. You loved the feeling of the grass between your toes.

(A/N) sucky ending but there will be a part two. It might take a while though because I'm backed up on assignments :0
