Valentine's day was on a Tuesday. You groggily shut up your alarm clock and rolled out of bed. You did your morning routine and while you were curling your hair, Jack came up behind you and wrapped his arms around your waist. You could see him coming in the reflection of the mirror, but the sudden hug made the curler touch your neck. "Ow!" you jumped, pulling the hot metal away from you and clasping your hand over your neck.

Jack let go of you and turned you around. He spewed apologies as he removed your hand from your neck, examining your skin. It was a reddish color already, and it looked a bit like a hickey. Most of the pain had already subsided, leaving you with a tingly sore feeling on your neck. Jack wet a washcloth with cold water and gently held it to your neck, looking you in the eyes. "I'm sorry," he said again.

"It's okay, really," you smiled.

You finished getting ready and kissed Jack goodbye before putting on a coat and scarf and heading to work. Upon arrival, you said hello to a few colleagues. You made your way to your office and removed your coat and scarf as the room was warm enough without all of that on.

You did some paperwork and took in down the hall to your friend. She smiled and thanked you. Her smile then dropped and was so replaced by a small smirk. "Started Valentine's early, did you?" she giggled. Your eyes widened and you remembered the burn.

"No, no, no, this isn't a hickey. I burned my neck," you explained. She nodded, still smiling. "Mhm, sure."

You huffed and went back to your office, just wanting to go home. The last ten minutes of your work day was spent thinking. You needed to get something for Jack, but what? You wished you had just asked him what he wanted for Valentine's day instead of having to guess. Before going home, you stepped into a shop to see what they had. There was an entire isle dedicated to Valentine's day gifts. You found a heart-shaped plastic box that contained shot-sized bottles of alcohol instead of chocolates. You hoped Jack would like it.

You opened the front door, the heart-shaped box peeking put of your purse. You quickly hid it behind something nearby, and just in time. Jack came around the corner, smiling. "Welcome home," he said before kissing your cheek. He revealed a bouquet he was hiding behind his back. "Happy Valentine's day," he said, giving you the carnation of peony flowers.

"Roses are red,

Violets are blue,

I can't write poems for shit,

But I still love you," he said, caressing your cheek and wearing a goofy grin.

You giggled and showed him his gift. He smiled and thanked you with a kiss on the cheek. When he opened it, his jaw dropped and he erupted with laughter.

The rest of the evening was spent consuming a minimal amount of alcohol and a ton of chocolate. You cuddled up to Jack in bed and tried to watch romantic movies with him, but those always made you cringe so you both ended up watching cute/funny videos of animals and babies on YouTube.
