It was nearly three o'clock in the afternoon. You were supposed to clock out an hour ago, but orders at the shop had somehow gotten messed up. You would have felt bad leaving your co-workers to deal with the problem, even if two of the three were androids. So by the time you finally put on your coat to leave, it was 2:54 PM.
"I'm heading out," you said, flipping your hair over your scarf.
"Thanks so much for staying over time," Angela gushed, sliding a thin box into an empty slot. Harry and Drew joined in, thanking you with their programmed statements. You smiled sadly, then reassured them that it was no problem.
You finally left the store, stepping out onto a thin layer of snow. You shoved your hands into your pockets and playfully kicked up the snow in your path as you began to walk home. A rowdy crowd caught your attention. They seemed distracted, as they appeared to be huddling around something. You cautiously neared the group to see a man kicking an Android who was on the ground.
"Hey!" you shouted, shoving through the people surrounding the Android. Only then did you see his face. "Jack!"
You fell to your knees beside him, hands worriedly roaming over his body. The closest watchers stepped back. Jack began to sit up, holding up a hand to let you know he was fine. Your head whipped around, glaring at his attacker. You were suddenly up on your feet, your brain taking the fight option over flight for once in your life. Jack's hand was tight around your wrist, keeping you from charging at the man who was now mocking you.
"I hope you're satisfied," you hissed. You felt Jack rise to his feet and slowly let go of you, but he angled his body so that he was between you and the assailant. "I'd like to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my ass."
A police officer finally approached the group, just in time too. The guy may have punched you if he hadn't arrived. You grabbed Jack's upper arm and moved away from the crowd, almost slipping from how fast you were walking. You slowed a little after you covered some distance.
"What the hell are you doing out here?" you asked, squeezing his arm but not looking up at him. He couldn't ignore the slight crack in your voice and your watering eyes.
"I came to get you," he responded, subtly holding his hand over your gloved ones. If anyone asked, it was to keep your fingers warm.
"You didn't- you didn't have to."
"Your father asked me to," he clarified. You frowned for a moment, thinking that he was only following orders, and didn't check on you on his own accord. "I was worried," he finally admitted.
You looked up to meet his gaze. As you passed by more people, you cleared your throat and let go of his arm. He stood up straight, putting on his best 'I'm not a deviant' face. It would have made you giggle if the circumstances were different.
When you arrived back home, you stood in the doorway, removing your outerwear, as Jack went to tell your dad that you were home. You retreated to your room and left the door open. Jack slipped through a moment later, softly shutting the door behind him and telling you he said you were going to take a nap.
You suddenly pulled him into a hug, crying softly into his shoulder. He allowed his arms to wrap around you and nuzzled his face into your neck. You noticed he was swaying you both side to side, something you did when you hugged him for a long time. A small breath of a laugh escaped your lips and Jack pulled back, an amused smile appearing on his face now.
You pulled him over to your bed and he automatically collapsed beside you and snaked an arm around your stomach. You closed your eyes and let yourself relax into him.
