Jaime's POV

_______

The piercing sound of an infant's cry awoke me the next morning. The sun was just over the horizon, and I was wide awake. Vic, on the other hand, was fine. Soundly asleep, snoring lightly. I slid out of bed to go cease the noise. Mike, Tony, Evie and I all seemed to be doing the same thing.

"Does he need to be changed?" Tony asked. Evie held River on her lap and checked his diaper.

"No." Evie answered. Mike frowned, his eyes bloodshot.

"Is he hungry?" I asked her. She shook her head.

"Vic fed him a few minutes before they fell asleep." Evie replied sadly.

"Then what's wrong with him?" Tony asked her, his voice impatient.

"I dunno." Evie said quietly. She tried to console River but all he did was cry harder.

"Maybe he's bored." Mike suggested mildly. I shrugged. Did babies get bored? I'd assume so.

"Who wants to play with him then?" My question hung in the air. I knew Tony wouldn't, he was beyond tired. Evie probably wanted a break from having to do this every day, and Mike...I dunno. I figured that I could stand to lose an few hours of sleep. "I'll do it, you guys go back to sleep." Evie handed me River and a told me how to calm him down. Once River was quiet and all giggles and garbles again, Tony and Mike went back to their bunks.

"Thank you, Jaime." Evie said, a tired grin in her face.

"No problem. You can go back to sleep." I assured her.

"Actually, there's something I need to tell you."

"Okay, is it good or bad?"

"Depends upon how you take it."

"Okay. What is it?"

"I don't want you to get too comfortable with River." She started. I was confused. I knew both of them wouldn't be there long, but I liked River, he was cute as a button. "Because you're gay and I don't want my son to grow up a and be gay."

What the fuck? Had I heard her properly? River was still a baby and wouldn't remember this moment at all, it shouldn't matter if I'm gay or not. What matters is if I'm a good person who can be responsible for my own actions.

"Excuse me? First off, if River turns out to be gay, that's him and it doesn't matter that I'm gay. Second, what about Vic? Are you going to take his son because he's gay as well? Thirdly..How. Dare. You. How dare you say that to me?" I was upset, and hurt and ticked off. This girl was the same one that Vic had cheated on me with. She hadn't sat well with me in the first place. And now she was homophobic?

"Jaime, calm down. I didn't mean to offend you."

"How the hell else am I supposed to feel about that? You just basically told me I'm not good enough because of my sexuality."

"Please, calm down." No. I was livid, and each word that passed my lips just made me even more so. I stood, handed her back River and stormed off the bus, pointedly slamming the bus door behind me.
