Chapter 17: The Shirt

"What? Why?" asked Terezi confused. Now Tuesday mornings were honestly horrible for her. They were cold and dull. Being woken up earlier than usual was making it worse though the confusion covered that. It was about 6am when her friend called. She spent the next few minutes stumbling around  "I don't get it Kanaya why are we going to the Mall?"

"We're um...going to go clothes shopping. Perhaps we can find something to your liking?" Kanaya stumbled around with her words as she tried to think of a valid excuse. Terezi sensed something was wrong. Rarely did Kanaya call her this early in the morning and to ask to go shopping of all things. She was tempted to say it was ridiculous.

"Clothes shopping?" She said sceptically. Though it was a faint scent she could smell the lie. Hard to notice at first but if you really payed attention you wouldn't miss it.

"Well it's a nice way to hang out. We could also go to the cafe if you want?"

There was some truth in that. Ever since CG and her were matesprits she had missed so many social events because she had to check if he was online. Now she could access the chatrooms on the laptop but she couldn't help but want to 'see' him. For awhile he had been quite elusive.

"Ok Kanaya but next time don't call so early" she groaned flopping backwards into her bed. A cold draft waffled through her room running chills through her body. The window is open again?

"Sorry it was urgent"

"Urgent?"

"Um...yes?"

"Why is it so urgent?"

"Well...oh hey I forgot about that English homework due in today sorry I need to go now bye!" Kanaya rambled before ending the call.

"Wait but..." What the heck is going on? She thought confused. Kanaya was probably lying but why was she so nervous. Well in a few short hours she had school so she would have to hunt her down at lunch. She yawned tiredly placing her phone back on her desk. Back to sleep she thought too tired to think of anything else.

Saturday rolled round faster than she had expected. Kanaya had offered her no other clues as to why she was so urgent. She figured it was probably some sort of surprise that involved her. It wasn't her birthday yet. She smirked remembering what had happened last year. In fact it was very similar to the situation she was in. The next step was to figure out who was setting it up. If it was a nice surprise probably not Vriska. As much as Terezi hated to admit Vriska still wasn't very nice to her though she had been trying ever since the incident. Worse case scenario if it were Nepeta then she would be setting her up on a blind date but then Terezi doubted Kanaya would have been convinced into doing it.

Kanaya showed up with Porrim and together they all drove to the mall. They strolled around a few shops for awhile. Unsurprisingly the mall was packed with crowds and crowds of teens alike. Porrim had left them to fend for themselves. Something about another band practice. 

It was quite fun Terezi had to admit. She'd often hide in the aisle with the most red clothing while Kanaya would try to find her. The ensuring chaos that followed was funny to say the least. How do you lose a blind girl? Not to sure but Kanaya was good at it. It should count as a skill. Eventually Kanaya realised Terezi's pattern and found her quicker each time. Terezi had the feeling she got strange looks from the people passing by. Every time Kanaya would walk past her hiding spot she'd let out a quiet chortle freaking out innocent shoppers nearby.

Kanaya was thankful that Terezi was keeping herself busy. Honestly her friends should just stop asking her to be a distraction. She wasn't good at lying to friends even if it were for a good cause. It was especially hard due to the fact that this was Terezi. She has the natural instincts of just finding it out. Last year she almost ruined her own surprise party granted Kanaya's cover story wasn't exactly full proof.
