Chapter 10: Ring and Stew

“Yes. I have a few. Why do you need one?” – he answered.

“Just to hang a ring,” – I explained to him, and his fist clenched over the ring around his neck.

I chuckled, “No. Not that one. This one” – I held the ring out for him to see. It was a gold ring, with a square top. The top was filled with a burgundy stone, with a large “G” in the center. Under the “G” was a picture of a horn. Boromir’s horn.

Frodo observed it, and even Sam came over to look at it.

Frodo reached into his pocket, and dropped a silver chain into my outstretched hand, before he turned back to the stew. I put the ring on the chain, and then put it over my head. Safely tucking the ring under my many leather lairs.

I gave it a pat to make sure it was in place, and then handed the leaves to Sam.

He slumped down on a rock that was around the fire and threw the leaves on top of the stew.

“You know, we could do with a few good taters’” – he grumbled, stirring the stew.

I rolled me eyes, leaning back onto the rock, and covering my eyes with my arm.

“And where are we going to get those?” – I asked him sarcastically.

Gollum stopped throwing himself all over the ground, and sat up, “What taters’ precious? What’s taters’, eh?” – he asked in his halting speech.

San rolled his eyes, and leaned forward at Gollum,

“You know P.O.T.A.T.O.E.S! Boil them, mash them, stick ‘em in a stew?”

Gollum made throwing up noises, and crawled across the ground on his stomach whimpering.

I sat up, and asked “Is there any chance we could eat now?”

Sam looked up at me and grumbled, “Get out your bowl.”

I did, and he ladled some of the stew-goo into it.

I sat back and took a huge spoonful. I was hungry, and it didn’t actually taste that bad. I was getting tired of Lembas bread as a meal three times a day.

Frodo came over and he and Sam ate their stew as well. Gollum wasn’t going to eat it though, so I set aside my bowl, and walked over to him drawing my sword.

“Eat it!” – I told him in my deepest, scariest voice.

“No! No!” – he cried, “Have mercy on Sméagol!”

“Mercy? Mercy? I give no mercy!” – I chuckled coldly, handing him a bowl of stew. “Now eat!”

I pressed the tip of my sword against his chest, and he took a bite.

His eyes bugged out of his head, and he was about to spit it out, but I pressed the sword a little harder.

“Swallow it!” – I snarled fiercely.

He did, and then I forced him to eat the rest of the bowl of stew.

After he was done he threw himself on the ground screaming and crying.

I walked back over to where Sam and Frodo were sitting with their eyes just about popping out of their heads.

‘Why did you do that?” – Frodo asked me shocked.

I shrugged my shoulders, “He was too skinny!”
