Chapter 13: A difficult proposition

Faramir looked over at me and said,

“I’ll let your friends go, on one condition.”

I raised my eyebrow, and motioned for him to continue with my hand.

“Yes?” – I prompted him.

“I will let your friends go, if you stay here with me.” – he finished.

My mouth dropped open. I had been prepared for him to ask for information, or money, or even his ale back, but not this.

“You what?” – I managed to finally choke out.

“You can stay here with me!” – Faramir said mater-o-factly.

“I can’t do that!” – I spluttered, “I have to help them” – I jerked a finger at the Hobbits, “To Mordor!” – I waved my arms wildly, “The others need my help!” – told him.

He just crossed his arms and blinked at me smugly.

“Then I guess I can’t let your friends go.”

I clenched my teeth in irritation, he thought he could tell me what to do? We will see how long that lasts.

‘Oh, boy’ – Fred said. ‘You are going to make life one living hell for this guy aren’t you?’

I looked at Faramir, scrutinizing the man’s face. I was good at telling when people were bluffing, have I said that I am good at poker?

I could tell that he wasn’t bluffing though, he really would have us all stay here. How irritating, he has screwed up all my plans.

I glanced over at Frodo and Sam, where they nervously awaited my decision. Frodo wrapped his finger around the chain that held his necklace on and bit his nails.

Sam patted Frodo on the back to try and calm him down, as he looked over at me.

My brain was sore from me trying to think of a way to get out of this situation, but for once in a long time I couldn’t think of one.

“Fine.” – I muttered, “I will stay.”

Faramir grinned and got to his feet, ‘Then your small friends are free to go at anytime.”

I got to my feet and prodded him in the chest, “And what about me then?”

He looked me in the eye and replied, “You can travel back to Gondor with me.”

I clenched my jaw, and crossed my arms, “I am not backtracking!” – I growled.

“Then your friends can’t go!” – Faramir told me, smirking.

I took at deep breath, willing myself not to do anything that I might regret, and answered, “Fine. I will come. But-“ I pointed one finger at Sam and Frodo, “If they die because I’m not there, I hope you know that it is on your head!”

Faramir just shook his head,

“They won’t die!” – he responded cheerfully.

“For your sake they had better not!” – I told him, as Frodo and Sam both gulped.
