Sam stared after Gabriel as he sat down at his desk. Damn, he had a nice ass-- wait, brain, shut up!
Sam looked back down at his desk, pushing thoughts about Gabriel away. He needed to focus if he was going to ask Jess out at lunch in two class blocks.
Curse Kevin for forcing me to ask her. She doesn't even know me in the slightest!
Suddenly, the bell rang. Sam got up and left in the wave of kids leaving the room. He joined the mass of kids shuffling down the hallway. He had gym next period--the actual bane of his existence.
The gymnasium was on the other side of the school, so Sam had to really book it. He hustled down the halls, pushing through groups of chatting guys and gossiping girls. He speed-walked down a flight of stairs and into the gym.
The gym--the place where everyone but a select few are humiliated on a daily basis. Sam ran into the locker room and threw on his gym clothes, the customary red and gold t-shirt and black gym shorts. Jogging back out onto the gym floor, he spotted Kevin.
"Hey." He said by greeting.
"Did you change your mind? Are you going to ask Jess out?" Kevin asked, referring to their conversation from yesterday that the author didn't write.
Sam shrugged. "If I can get my self-esteem up, I'll do it at lunch."
"Good luck with that. Satrina's in a bad mood today."
From across the gym, Sam's gym teacher, Ms. Satrina, barked, "Winchester! Tran! Drop and give me 20 push-ups!"
Sam and Kevin groaned and started their push-ups. Sam finished first, and Kevin finished a minute or so after.
But the Ms. Satrina wasn't paying attention to them. She was barking at someone else, someone with a lollipop in their mouth and a smirk on their lips. Gabriel, the kid from English class.
"Novak! What have I told you about candy in the gym?!"
Gabriel shrugged. "I can't have it?"
"Yes! Now throw that away!"
Gabriel did just that. Ms. Satrina did that to people. At first glance, her blond curls and smoky gray eyes made her look innocent, but when you crossed her... Let's just say that you'd be sorry.
After Gabriel threw out his lolly, Ms. Satrina turned to the rest of the gym. "Today we'll be playing dodgeball! Sheppard, Milligan, you're captains!" Ms. Satrina liked to call her students by last name. 'Sheppard' was a dickbag named Crowley. He had taken the place of school bully when Lucifer Novak graduated last year. 'Milligan' was a kid named Adam that Sam was vaguely sure he was related to.
The picking began. First, all the athletic kids were picked, then the not-so-athletic-but-aren't-that-bad ones. Finally, only nerds and geeks were left in the picking pool. Gabriel had been picked by Adam. Jo and Jess were picked by Crowley.
Crowley pointed at Kevin. "I want Kevin."
"I want Charlie." Adam said, pointing at a red-headed girl that Sam had seen around school some.
"I want Alex." Crowley said, pointing at a quiet, black-haired girl Sam didn't know.
Sam was the last one without a team. Adam pointed at him. "I guess I get Sam."
Ms. Satrina blew her whistle and threw a basket of balls in the middle of the gym. Each team took a side. The game began.
Even though he was a total nerd, Sam actually wasn't terrible at dodgeball. If you hang out in the back, behind everyone, you never get hit. Gabriel jogged over to him. "Heya, Sammy."
"Hi, Gabriel." A ball whizzed by Sam's head, hitting the wall next to his head.
"Close one." Gabriel teased.
A ball flew at Gabriel. Sam caught it just in time. "Close one." He said with a smirk.
"Touché, Sammy."
At that point, half the gym was out. On the other team, it was just Crowley, Balthazar, Benny, Alex, and Jo. On Sam's team, it was him, Gabriel, Adam, Charlie, and Ruby from English class.
Sam noticed Gabriel staring at Jo. "You should ask her out, dude."
"I want to at lunch," Gabriel smiled.
A ball smacked Charlie and ricocheted to hit Ruby. Both girls were out. Adam threw two balls simultaneously and hit Balthazar with one and Alex with another. Benny threw a ball at Gabriel's head. It missed him by a fraction of an inch. Gabriel retaliated by throwing the ball at Benny with deadly accuracy and speed. Benny didn't even have time to dodge.
Jo threw a ball at Adam, missing. Adam retaliated and threw it back. It hit Jo square in the chest, right where the Lawrence High School logo was plastered on her gym shirt. Crowley smirked at threw two balls at Adam, both hitting their mark.
Now it was Sam and Gabriel against the reigning champion of dodgeball. Crowley had a dozen balls around him. If Sam could just hit one, they would distract him, giving Sam's team a chance to hit him.
Sam and Gabriel both picked up a ball.
Sam threw his at Crowley's feet. It struck the balls around his feet, scattering them. For a brief second, Crowley was distracted. That was enough for Gabriel. He threw his ball at Crowley's chest, hitting him before he knew what happened.
They won.

So, they're becoming friends. But they still think they're straight, ugh. Wait, I'm in total control of this story. I can make them as gay as I want! Actually, that came out wrong.
By the way, that dodgeball strategy, "stay back and you won't get hit", is actually my strategy in every gym game ever.
So, longer chapter. But I update two updates in two days, so that's something. As always, thanks for reading!! If you enjoyed, please vote and comment because it would help me out a ton!
