"Okay, you must be Alexis."
I extended my arm out to greet the middle aged doctor who just walked through the door.
"Yes, and this is Danielle."
She shook my hand firmly before walking over to the sink and washing her hands. She grabbed a pair of blue latex gloves, and placed them quickly on her rough hands.
"Hi nice to meet both of you. I'm Dr. Jamison. I'll hopefully be clearing you to walk again."
She gave me a meaningless smile before consuming herself in my chart. When she said hopefully my confidence meter lowered about 90%. The doctor had red hair that was not perfectly straightened, but good enough. Her eyes were brown which softened her features, and her skin beared many wrinkles on simple places like her mouth, eyes, and forehead.
"Okay, can you stand up for me."
I got off the table, and stood up as quickly and normally as possible. For weeks I'd been waiting for this appointment. Last week I gave up my crutches against doctor's orders, and started to walk on my own unless I really needed them. Eventually, the pain dialed down, and I could limp. My strides weren't back to normal, but then again they weren't exactly normal before.
I watched her step back to examine my legs some more before she speaks again. Her voice is normally pitched, but somewhat scratchy. I knew she smoked, because I smelled it on her the moment she walked into the room.
"Alright, can you lift up your leg, stretch it, flex your foot, put it back down, then walk over to the counter."
I nodded, and smiled internally at the familiar directions that David gave me. I did exactly as she said, and felt no pain. I had been doing the same excercises everyday for the past month and a half. I walked over to the counter, and she eyed me with impressment written on her face.
"Good. I'm very surprised. Normally with your situation the patient wouldn't ever be able to walk again. Let alone in only a month."
"Thank you."
It came out more as a question, because I didn't know if that was a compliment or her just thinking out loud.
"Okay, well I'll go get your papers, and we can have you out of here in no time. Except this time without the crutches and wheel chair."
I clapped my hands together, and Danielle squealed earning us both a smile. This time her smile surprised me. When I think of people who smoked I envisioned decaying teeth, bad mouth hygiene, etc. Her smile was completely flawless, and I gawked at how reassuring and beautiful it was. She left, and before I knew it I was on my way home with nothing holding me back. Well except the fact that I had to be on a plane in a couple days to go meet the person that created the person I fell in love with. How much has Luke really told her about us? I mean that is his mother.
'Does she know about Michael and I?
No that's impossible right? Right?'I barged into my dorm and swung the door open making it hit the wall adjacent to it. Everyone was all settled in the living room. They all smiled at me when I stood there in the doorway with my arms in the air.
"I'm cleared!"
Danielle clapped her hands and Mike, Luke, and Josh jumped off the couch to come and hug me.
"GROUP HUG!"
Everyone gathered around me, and hugged each other. I was in the very middle, and I could feel everyone's warmth encase me. Their love for each other was clearly evident, and I loved being a part of this 'family'.
