Chapter 24. Creatures of the Night

"And I guess the real question is, have you ever thought to do the same?"

My eyes shot open, my mind on high alert. A fuzzy silence met my ears as I remained paralyzed in my bed. Darkness surrounded me, the sun wasn't even up yet. Shifting my eyes slowly over to the digital clock on the bedside table, I saw the time was 3:38 A.M. I sighed, my eyes grazing back over to the ceiling. The sweet dreams I desperately wanted to have were crushed by the sickening presence and voice-over of Gavin. My dream had turned sour at the sound of his all-too-familiar-voice. He was taunting me, even in my sleep. He was whispering things such as why I never told anyone before about how he would hit me. He was whispering that he bet deep down I loved it. He was whispering that I deserved every smack I got and he would do it again. I awoke from the treacherous dream with him asking me if I ever thought of fighting him back.

Oh I did.

A lot.

But I never followed through.

I couldn't.

I shook my head, vexed with my past choices. Gavin shouldn't have gained the upper hand on me, both literally and figuratively. I used to be happy. I used to smile, and frequently too. Then things turned on me; people turned on me. Shaking my head again at my own self-pity, I stiffly rolled over onto my side and faced Jasper's bed. He was still lying over the blankets with his face dug into one of the pillows. I smiled at the scene.

He seemed peaceful.

A little too peaceful maybe.

I widened my eyes.

Was he dead?

"Jasper?" I whispered.

No answer.

I threw a pillow at him.

"The hell..." he grumbled and I let out a breath of relief.

"I thought you were dead," I explained in a hushed tone.

His eyes pried themselves open and even in the dark I could see his blue eyes staring back at me. He hoisted himself up into a planking position to glance down at his pillow where a small pool of drool rested. He grimaced and I scrunched my nose up in disgust and amusement. His pillow was then thrown to the floor. With a drowsy yawn he lifted his shirt from off his back and over his head, throwing that to the ground as well.

My gaze flickered away, but I couldn't help look back.

It was one of those things where you knew it was nothing, you were both friends, but in the back of your mind you knew it was definitely something.

Jasper proceeded to take his jeans off, leaving him in his briefs and I snorted, catching his attention.

"What?" His raspy voice questioned.
