Chapter 12. The Abandoned Barn

Jasper continued to drive as many thoughts swirled throughout my mind in pure curiosity. He still hasn't spoken a word after he admitted that he knew who Nathan was meeting with. Now we're just driving to wherever Jasper thinks Nathan will meet this mystery person again. Jasper lifts his right arm up to scratch his neck as we continue on our route down a busy street, but when he lifts his arm, I notice dark ink marked on his forearm as a tattoo of some kind.

He drops his arm, placing his hand back on the steering wheel and I move my gaze away.

We have been driving for nearly an hour and a half and I'm really starting to think he is just kidnapping me.

"Why won't you tell me where we're going?" I question in curiosity.

"Listen, I just.. I don't want to get you into trouble." he murmurs.

"Jasper, I'll be fine." I try to coax him.

"We're just going to a place I've been a couple of times." he shrugs.

He swerves the truck out of the busy streets and the bright lights from the city begin to fade when we drive farther away, trusting the mysterious path of nothing but gravel.

A large, dark red barn is planted in the middle of this abandoned area we just pulled up into and it almost seems comically suspicious. Jasper parks the rusty truck he owns and the vehicle rumbles down when he yanks his keys from the ignition.

I notice his jaw visibly clench as he unbuckles, keeping his strong gaze on the barn that has a flickering light above the barn doors that sputters the words "open."

"Come on," he intakes a large breath and exits the truck with me following suit.

By now, it's almost around two-thirty in the afternoon, yet the sky seems gloomy from the grey clouds that swarm over the once light blue sky. Rain is most likely to come soon, but as of now, I will enjoy the cool breeze of June.

A large chain is tied up on the barn doors, linking together the handles so nobody can enter. A padlock is also securely strapped to the bottom of the chains and is tightly pressed to the front of the barn door handles.

"Well, it looks like it's locked. If we--"

Jasper takes a step back and lunges his foot towards the lock and the barn doors rattle from the sudden force. He uses his muddy black Vans to slam against the lock and chains again and the doors rattle with intensity.

He kicks one more time with more force than before, almost as if anger was behind it, and the lock breaks off, falling to the gravel with a thump. Jasper steps forward again and pulls the rest of the chains out of the handles.

"Wow; impressive." I comment and I notice a small smirk on his face, even though he doesn't glance towards me.

His gaze moves upwards, to where the roof of the barn is and the very top of the doors are lined up at. He then lowers his eyes back to the handles and yanks one of them open, creating a long, painfully annoying creaking sound.

Surprise washes over me on what we discover inside.

A bar. A run down, abandoned bar.

Wooden chairs lay on their sides and some are even broken. Dust covers the bar stools and table tops, along with a couple of windows. Cobwebs hang from the ceiling and the broken lights. The only thing that truly stands out though, is the fact that there are more than twenty bottles of beer on tables and on floors, that don't have dust nor cobwebs, but actually appear to be new and empty.
